In the Midwest or at least my part of it, it's a thing to say that someone is good people, it's understood to mean that he or she is one of us, that they are on our side.
Indeed, I am a transplanted Midwesterner stuck in of all places, Boulder. My husbands company, which is filled with libs recently had a "trailor park" luncheon that they thought was hysterical. They had hot dogs, potato salad, and PBR. Must husband told them that they just insulted everyone living in the Midwest, as that is our normal summertime fare.
