Gov. Pataki made a good personal impression in Iowa this weekend, but Republican leaders say he has a long way to go before he can think about winning the 2008 presidential caucus.
The biggest hurdles.....he is still not well-known and ......and must defend his pro-choice, pro-gay rights and pro-gun control record, Iowa Republican county chairs and opinion makers say.
"Those three things are no-nos," said Scott County GOP Vice Chairman John Ortega, who, as a member of the state central committee, met with Pataki and was impressed with him.
David Yepsen, an influential political columnist for the Des Moines Register, said Pataki will have to address his record head-on to stand a chance in Iowa.
"A candidate with that kind of record in the Republican caucus will have a lot of explaining to do and some defense to play," Yepsen said.
No amount of explaining will help, said Boone County GOP Chairwoman Bonnie Hall. "I have not heard anyone say they are a Pataki fan. Anywhere" ..........

"Same in New York and beyond, Bonnie. Iowans have a lot of company."
I'm a pro-choice GOP'er so this issue is not a problem for me.
However, Pataki's stances on gay rights issues as well his inability to get on our side regarding the Ground Zero site will take him out of consideration for me.
Boone County, home of straight-speaking Iowegians.
The schlub is DOA.
Great people. Glad they're in there making the pro-abort wannabes face the music.
I have had it with these people from the Northeast and would not vote for one of them if he or she could walk on water.
"The biggest hurdles.....he is still not well-known and ......and must defend his pro-choice, pro-gay rights and pro-gun control record."
Oh, c'mon, only those things? Geez, if I'd known that was all, I'd have bet on Pataki already! /sarc
"Poetic" way of putting it....but, yeah, that about describes George's chances at getting the nod.
RINOS? Walk on water? No problem ----nevah happen.
Thank You!
Pataki is a Pataki fan. That's about it.
30 governors went to Iowa, for a meeting that had nothing to do with the '08 caucuses. All 30 of their home-state papers sized them up for a presidential run.
Believe me, Pataki is NOT going to run for President. He has about a snowball chance's in Hell of being re-elected in New York, where he is the most hated governor ever. And he knows it.
Amen.
It isn't just abortion or gay rights.
Pataki has proven himself to be incompetent.
NY government is a joke.
The country would be crazy to place such incompetence in the White House.
He may not actually run, but he sure as hell is thinking about it, and he surely craves it.
I wouldn't vote for this boob for worm catcher.
A leader? Yeah right.
