Vietnam was a tactical loss in the Cold War. However, it had strategic value. We held the line for years, and gave time for other countries to mature in peace.
If we had not fought in Vietnam, many other countries (and the Cold War) would have been lost.
The men who died did not die in vain.

Yes I agree. If it weren't for the troops that fought in Vietnam, all of SE Asia would be communist and probably the Philippines too.
I feel the best we could have of gotten out of that conflict would be what we have in Korea today. At least S. Vietnam would still be free. If we marched on Hanoi and/or the Red River, the Chicoms would have gotten a lot more involved.
