"They view him as a hard-right ideologue who delivers his views in a polished and gentlemanly manner."
Perfect for the job, then.
Of course, Gonzales is like the horehound candy that makes you pucker up a little ... but I don't think he is still on the list.
I agree with you about Cornyn being a possible Presidential candidate - perhaps in 2012 rather than 2008. I'm not sure the country would elect two Texans in a row.
Cornyn is an excellent spokesman for conservatives, very polished, articulate, with a friendly manner. That's why the NYTimes is putting this out now - a heads up so that he isn't seen by the public as a "new face".
I'm very glad that Cornyn and Thompson will be involved in the coming Supremes battle.
And Chuckie you're a lame-brained village idiot.
I doubt with this President being female is the biggest factor in nominating a SCOTUS member.
To his opponents, the combination of sharp political philosophy and smooth personal demeanor makes him a very dangerous man.
To the liberals, the threat to our country is smart, well-spoken conservatives. The liberals are fighting a war against this threat.
Maybe the rhetoric about our country having to fight a war on two fronts isn't so inflammatory after all.....
I personally know Sen. Cornyn and have volunteered for, and given money to, all his efforts from Tex. Supreme Court, to Atty. Gen, to Senate.
He IS very smart and honorable.
He IS pretty --- not very --- conservative. That said, one of the more conservative -- in the Senate.
He IS NOT a great campaigner. Unlike how he is one-on-one, he is too intellectual and rather boring in public speaking. He can scrape by in Texas --- because he is respected and it is a Republican state.
Like another honorable Senator, Bob Dole, on a national stage, Cornyn would be crushed by a more "charismatic" type.
Horrid to say, as he would be a great president, but very true.
Cornyn would be a superb nominee, and I would enjoy seeing his Dim colleagues in the Senate explain why they're filibustering his nomination.
It certainly doesn't help that the Republicans try to appease the Democrats at every opportunity. It's like, OMG, you sure don't want to use the Nuclear option. That might upset someone. Duh you ninny, that's the whole point. Use it or lose it, I say.
I too have met with him on occasion and agree with your comments......
Some Republican should point out that if the nuclear option is used, we are going to go back and push thru the nominees that McCain hung out to dry.
Doesn't Cornyn want to open the Mexican floodgates?
No, absolutely not. That's another myth spread by the professional fund raisers.
There have been several articles posted about his immigration reform package. Just do an FR search and see for yourself.
Amen to that brother.
"They view him as a hard-right ideologue who delivers his views in a polished and gentlemanly manner."
That's enoug hof an endorsement for me!
Besides, anybody Chuckie Schumer doesn't like has GOT to be good!!!!
A Texan!!! (who isn't Alberto "La Raza" Gonzalez) Yes! Are there any Texans currently serving on SCOTUS? If not, when was the last time a Texan served?
Interesting stuff on Cornyn ... thanks for the analysis.
The fact that Teddy is involved in anything Judicial is an obscenity.
