Here's what today's 2005 British Open win at St. Andrews means.

Tiger Woods is keeping up with the Jones: If you include the US and British Amatures as majors--which Nicklaus does--Tiger is now tied for second all-time with the great Bobby Jones.

The second British Open championship means Tiger owns multiple titles in each of the four majors--a career slam. Only Nicklaus has accomplished the feat before h im.

Woods broke the tie with Ben Hogan and Gary Player at nine career major professional victories. Major No. 10 gives him sole possession of third, one behind Walter Hagen.

Woods is the best finsher in the history of golf. He has now lead or shared the lead 10 times when entering the final round of a major. In each situation, he came away with the victory trophy.

No he doesn't. Jack has always maintained that he has only 18 majors.

Tiger has also never won a major when he wasn't leading after three rounds.

I used to knock Woods because he couldn't seem to keep his anger in check, and because sports writers crowned him King way too early in his career.

But his victory statement today was classy. He referred to Jack Nicklaus as "the greatest champion".

I still don't like the swear words Tiger usually mutters under his breath while under pressure situations in the final rounds, his dad should give him a stern talking to about that.

An often overlooked Nicklaus achievement is that he finished in second place in majors 19 times.

18 first place finishes and 19 second place finishes is just mind-boggling.

I get a kick out of people who say that he didn't have much competiton back then so it was easier for him .....as if Palmer, Casper, Trevino, Player, and Watson weren't amazing players.

In fact, I'd take those legends over Els, Mickelson, Vijay, and Goosen anyday.

He's such a loser!

I'm with you - Tiger is a class act as far as his golf game goes, but he could be that much classier by resorting to non-vulgar outbursts and stop taking the Lord's name in vain. If he can master his language, he will be a true example to our kids.

I agree. He also took things WAY too seriously. He'd lip out a 30 foot put for eagle in a tourney he was leading by 10 strokes, and he would get seriously p*ssed. I noticed he just missed a put today and he smiled about it. Maybe he's lightening up.

Tiger is a champion! No question he had some anger issues, but I always thought he was just young and immature. I think he has grown up and is now a class act. Not to mention, he has an incredibly beautiful wife. No wonder he smiles a lot now!! Go Tiger!

Tiger is good ....no, he is more than good ....he is great. Simply put. No matter what the naysayers may say Tiger could stop playing golf this very second and still go down history as one of the very best for as long as there are people and records.

bump

Yes, Tiger is a great champion.........but the way these idiot announcers kiss his ass constantly makes me puke. Every shot he makes is brilliant, while similar shots made by others are merely good, or OK.........They cover his every shot even while he's in 25th or 30th place.......ugh.

I remember at Pebble Beach in 2000 he slipped and let on fly in front of the mikes. Now he mutters it under his breath and the cameras have started to pick that up as well..

Very true. I think he will be regarded as the best ever before his career is over.
