Ex-Clinton Aide Charges Republicans 'Want to Kill Us'

(CNSNews.com) - Young liberals this week flocked to the nation's capital to hear, among other things, liberal television pundit and Democrat political strategist Paul Begala accuse Republicans of wanting to kill him and his children to preserve tax cuts for the rich.

Begala was featured at the first-ever Campus Progress National Student Conference, which was designed to provide campus liberals with the tools necessary to fight the conservative movement. The event also drew former President Bill Clinton, for whom Begala once worked as an advisor.

A panel discussion entitled "Winning the War of Ideas" centered on topics discussed in the book "What's the Matter with Kansas" by Thomas Frank and detailed the challenges that Democrats face in persuading voters in the American heartland and elsewhere to embrace their agenda and support their candidates.

Begala's presence on the panel created a stir when he declared that Republicans had "done a p***-poor job of defending" the U.S.

Republicans, he said, "want to kill us."

These statements are getting sillier and sillier and there's a reason. The people who say this stuff know the other side will be outraged and the comments will get much wider dissemination than they otherwise deserve.

Just because you think everyone is after you doesn't mean they're not.

I really think the Democratic party is going through its death throes.

The Clintons killed it and it is just wriggling on the floor getting ready to stop breathing.

Many *normal* people who are registered Democrat are starting to switch over to the Republican party, or going independent or Decline To State.

If things keep up, they will be like the Whigs.

HA! And you've been around long enough to remember when Begala used to try and spar with FReepers only to leave yelping with his tail between his legs!

i think Bill was an anomaly. The candidates fielded by the Dems before he came along were hapless shmucks. The trend has returned.

If you're a science fiction fan you'll understand when I say he's the Mule in Asimov's Foundation Trilogy. An accident that temporarily changes the course of history but has no lasting impact.

"I was driving past the Pentagon when that plane hit" on Sept. 11, 2001. "I had friends on that plane; this is deadly serious to me," Begala said.

"They want to kill me and my children if they can. But if they just kill me and not my children, they want my children to be comforted -- that while they didn't protect me because they cut my taxes, my children won't have to pay any money on the money they inherit," Begala said. "That is bulls*** national defense, and we should say that."

He is either a drunkard or mentally ill. Possibly both.

There are a few Freepers who will remember the time that I had a sparring match with Mr. Begala when we went to the taping of that silly TV show he used to have--(I can't think of the name of it).

I didn't really know him much as I had never watched that show, but he learned I was from Texas--and then I learned he was from Austin--and, well, we had this bizarre conversation, in front of the audience for his show. I was pretty much insulting him all along the way--but he apparently didn't get it.

I still think about that conversation once in a while, and just shake my head. Strange man--and from this article, he gets stranger, still.

I wondered why the dims were supporting the terrorists.

It appears they think that Republicans were flying those planes.

Not gonna completely disagree with you.

Another angle, that is consistent with my point but doesn't paint Bill as the source of the destruction....

A generational shift. Prior to Bill Clinton, the Democrat party was run by the old guard. After Tip O'neill and his crowd, the Democrat party shifted to the "Vietnam Generation" which included Bill Clinton.

These guys are the anti-war, dope-smoking, pro-homo, femnist crowd. They took control of the party and as they obtained power, scared the living bejeesus out of average Americans.

Perhaps that is the situation. The fact that Bill was one of them, and that he was a sleaze ball that cared only about his own (and his wife's) political power, could be considered secondary.

I guess the only difference in our point of view is that I believe the Dem party was in decline since Carter and you believe it's more recent but we both agree on the same outcome.
