Tougher enforcement at the border means little if system doesn't meet the nation's labor needs.

Our immigration system is out of control. We can't hold the line at the border. We can't prevent the hiring of unauthorized workers. Despite our tough rhetoric, an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants feed a vast underground economy that makes a mockery of the rule of law.

No wonder the public is hungry for tougher enforcement — and no wonder politicians from House Republican leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) are responding with promises to crack down. ....The truth is that beneath the bluster we're ambivalent about enforcing immigration law because we know that if we were to succeed, it could be disastrous for U.S. businesses and the American workers who depend on them.

Enhanced enforcement of immigration law is a key element of the legislation introduced in May by Kennedy and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). And it will surely be part of the more conservative Senate bill expected this month from Republicans John Cornyn of Texas and Jon Kyl of Arizona.

But just because everyone agrees more enforcement is necessary that doesn't mean we are on the verge of a solution. In fact, this only sets up a new battle between those who believe we can solve the immigration problem by appropriating money for enforcement only and those who see enforcement as part of a broader reform package.

Since Roe v. Wade in 1973, 40 million American babies have been brutally murdered. There is a massive labor shortage as a result.

We would not need any of the 11 million invaders, oops I meant "undocumented immigrants," if we had an adequate work force.

We'll survive without the illegals.

I just drove through town and saw about 40 of our "adequate work force" sittin and smokin on the courthouse square, trying to keep their pants on.

I do, however, agree with your point!

I don't sense any ambivlance in the voting public right now..ship them out.

I agree. Maybe we will have to give up having a McDonalds on every corner and some lawns might have to go un-mowed for longer, but so what? Maybe we'll have a few less fat a$$ teenagers as a result.

Yup, if you couldn't survive without having some sort of job, we wouldn't need any extra folk coming in to work.

Thanks so much for providing us with another biased pro-illegal alien flack piece from what is perhaps the worst and least credible left wing rag west of the Mississippi. It has all the journalistic integrity of that Houston birdcage liner you're so fond of quoting.

Don't you ever get tired of fronting for the cheap labor lobby and the illegal aliens? You know, considering you're one of those Big Tent RINOs/Liberals/Moderates and all...

A while back I was driving across Jackson Mi when I noticed a hispanic man mowing a lawn. On the steps sat a morbidly obese white teenager (400+lbs) eating an ice cream cone.

True. Now we must make the best of what we have. We need to educate and train the children we do have to enter the workforce at all skill levels if we are to compete with emerging Democracies and capitalist countries of China, India and the Middle East. And that includes ALL children, not just the daughters of the American Revolution.

Once again, no substantive comment, just personal insults.

We won't lose a workforce, we have one here now, they are called Ameicans, citizens and LEGAL residents. As soon as we start arresting employers for hiring ILLEGALS and start making it very difficult for ILLEGALS to get employment here the wages will go up for the unskilled jobs and Americans will do them.

As for skilled jobs, we have the work force here now, the problem is our schools are turning out uneducated children who are ill equipped to go on to further education and remain unskilled. These problems are both easily solved without ILLEGALS entering into it and allows us to keep the money they send to Mexico and other countires in our economy, plus we will not be paying out the money on health care for these ILLEGALS that we do now. Getting the ILLEGALS under control will only benefit our country not hurt it.

As for the remote possibility that we do need the labor, we can always up the quota for LEGAL immigrants into this country. It is just idiotic to think we need ILLEGAL aliens to help us run our country!

We already HAVE an "adequate labor force". What the "illegal immigration backers" are looking for is an adequate SLAVE LABOR force.

NO AMNESTY! DEPORT ALL ILLEGALS!!! TODAY!!!!!!

As long as they're here legally, fine. If not, put'em on a bus or plane and send'em home. "Making the best of what we have" does NOT include the illegals. They should all be rounded up and deported.

"...just personal insults."

Really? Well, lets see. My first paragraph simply states facts concerning, and directed at, the LA Times and Houston papers, not you. Of course, you do keep choosing all of these left wing periodicals as your authoritative sources which, I suppose, can make one feel insulted about one's poor judgement in that respect.

As for my second paragraph, I see no basis for your playing insult victim there either. First, it seems to me that most everyone on the immigration threads is well aware of your cheap labor/pro-illegal alien postings and comments. If you insist on flacking for them, don't complain when you're called on it.

Lastly, as we determined on a different thread, you're no conservative. You claim to be a Republican, though, so by process of elimination that leaves only the RINO/Liberal/Moderate categories for you to occupy.

Quit whining.

You just illustrated one of my biggest gripes. LET OUR KIDS WORK! Many of them WANT to work and it builds character. The attitude in our society that work equates with child abuse it silly. We coddle them for 20 years, then wonder why many of them have horrible attitudes about work when they grow up.

And, yes. It would also help the obesity epidemic.

This is bovine excrement. If there is a U.S. business that cannot survive without employing illegal immigrants, then they don't deserve to be in business. If this means I have to pay more for a head of lettuce, then so be it. The real problem here is that we have a bloated, cowardly federal bureaucracy which has demonstrated its lack of resolve to enforce the law. It's time to vote out those who refuse to enforce the law and vote in those who will.
