The last two paragraphs go a long way in explaining where this investigation is heading, IMHO.

Mr. Wilson's official role ended when he returned from Niger in March. The CIA didn't get the Italian forgeries until October. Mr. Wilson had no access to them. He either was making up what he told Mr. Kristof and Mr. Pincus, or he had received an unauthorized leak of classified information.

If the Wilson-leak is the real thing, there will be ample schadenfreude in the weeks ahead.

Here's a thought about this whole "CIA Leak" crapola and Valerie Plame:

I submit that the so-called "leak" was engineered by Wilson and Plame, themselves. What if, after Wilson returned from his non-fact finding mission in Niger, the CIA made it clear that Plame's job would be gone if it were discovered that Wilson falsified the information he claims not to have uncovered about Iraq trying to buy yellowcake uranium? Since Plame recommended him for the assignment and he just squandered the time and our money, the CIA would have good reason to question Plame's judgement.

What better way to salvage her job than to engineer the "leak" and claim that it was the Bush Administration that did it? If she loses her job now, it appears to support the notion that the Bush Administration has a vendetta against Plame. So, to keep from looking as though they are out to get her, the Bush Administration will do anything to keep her employed until all of the investigations and charges are completed.

In the meantime, Plame and Wilson are free to keep the story alive and use the press and Dem operatives as willing accomplices to try to find a way to give this non-story legs and strike a blow against the Bush Administration. To date, all of the investigations of this non-story have pointed back to Plame and Wilson - primarily Wilson as the source of the "leak".

This is more than just hatred, this is pathological and is indicative of the desperation that liberals have. While the Dems are still trying to figure out what their core beliefs are, they attack the Bush Administration over nonsense and the useless MSM is acting like the junkyard dogs that they are.

From what I've read there's huge dislike of Bush in the CIA, which might explain a leak from that direction. It might also explain why Bush selected a pit bull to go in there and straighten the CIA out and why so many high level resignations followed that selection.

I just dug this up from a CNN story discussing the beginning of the work of the grand jury:

Anyone who's subpoenaed in the inquiry, noted the lawyer, can be almost certain that prosecutors aren't contemplating indicting him or her. Subpoenas are rarely sent to the targets of an investigation, and if they are, the recipients must be told in advance that they are considered targets—at which point they would almost certainly cite the 5th Amendment and refuse to answer questions.

A huge unanswered question in this case is whether the leaker or leakers knew that Plame was undercover when they gave her identity away. That is a necessary element for any indictment for leaking the name of a covert agent. However, charges could also be brought for making false statements to the FBI, if a guilty party has falsely claimed innocence in interviews with government agents.

So, Rove has testified three times, he surely has not invoked the Fifth Amendment, nor has anyone else or this fact surely would have been leaked to the New York Times. That makes it blindingly obvious that Karl Rove is not a target of this investigation. But has anyone seen any evidence that Valerie Plame or Joe Wilson HAVE tesified?

I think this investigation is now about who knew what about why Valerie Plame was so intent on having her husband go to Niger for the CIA, not once, but twice.

Actually I have a strong suspicion that the Plames (Mr. & Mrs.) were in cahoots with the anti-Bush, anti-war on terror democrats to do this (get Hoe to Niger and then back with bad info) to halt the war on terror, and to keep W from reelection, and if the former or latter is true, it is treason because they sought to do harm to the US for political reasons. In doing so they used government agencies to hurt the country

My opinion? This was an effort by Wilson, his wife, and others in the news media to influence American foreign policy by discrediting Bush and the war in Iraq.

It has nothing to do with Rove or the administration. What we is a brazen example of liberals in the CIA working with leftists fellow travellers in the news media to plant a fabricated story to influence American policy. That is the ugly truth of all of this, and the liberal establishment will do anything they can to ensure that no one ever knows about it.

Shades of the leaking of the Weinberg indictment the week before the '92 election.

I agree with Kelly. There's more here than just who our gal Val is, and who she worked for. Of course, the dems want us to focus on that.

KA CHING

And this is why the NYT reporterette is sitting in jail right now. This prosecutor is after a major conspiracy involving rogue elements within CIA and State, primarily Clintonista allies. These are either Clinton appointees or ones who rose to power under the bent one's corrupt regime.

They found and appointed or promoted those who would be loyal to them and not to the country. And Hillary promises to come back and take care of those that have taken care of her interests.

The dims have lost consistently at the ballot box for 10 years and can't stand it. They're now trying to seize back power "by any means necessary." They are truly at war with democracy in the United States of America.

This is part of a coup attempt, pure and simple, and the old media allies of the dims are now actively and overtly involved in trying to carry out the scheme.

And the prosecutor in the Plame/Wilson case, Patrick Fitzgerald, is also investigating Judith Miller for having intentionally leaked news of an FBI raid to the jihadi "charity" front group, Global Relief Foundation, and allowing them to destroy their records.

There is every chance, if Fitzgerald pushes this the way he might, that this will be bigger than Watergate. The difference is that it will be the demonrats and their old media allies being "frog marched" out to waiting prison buses.

Finally this whole web is starting to make sense. It all goes back to the original question: Why was Wilson sent to Niger? Rove is a red herring.

A random theory from my random thoughts:

Valerie Plame and/or Joe Wilson leaked to Judith Miller.

Judith Miller leaked to Matthew Cooper and/or Bob Novak.

Bob Novak wrote his article, Matthew Cooper asked Karl Rove about Wilson, Rove had already heard rumblings about it, tried to steer Cooper away from publishing a false story based on Wilson's lies, those lies were indeed proven to be fabrications straight from Wilson's demented (or is it fermented?) mind, and as others have suggested, the whole "leak" gambit (accusing the Bush Administration of leaking Plame's name) was nothing but an effort by the Wilson/Plame's to save themselves from the inevitable prosecutorial can of whoopazz that I STILL believe is going to be opened up on 'em.

If you believe what Wilson says, and that takes a huge leap of faith, Novak told him that someone in the CIA revealed his wife's identity. If true, another fact that exonerates Rove.

"The last two paragraphs go a long way in explaining where this investigation is heading, IMHO."

Man, that would be great. Wouldn't it?

Unfortunately, call me pessimistic, but intent would be pretty hard to prove. And if it gets anywhere near that, the media will simply bury the story.

Oh well...
