I have no idea what he's saying here. Is he telegraphing that his "mainstream" appointment will be "acceptable" to Americans? Or that, a la Ginsburg and Breyer, who were overwhelmingly confirmed, he will pick nominees from the other side of the spectrum, and he expects their quick confirmation?

Not feeling great about this....

Agreed. "Mainstream" means Gonzales (I think).

It will be the office of the President to NOMINATE, and, with the advice and consent of the Senate, to APPOINT. There will, of course, be no exertion of CHOICE on the part of the Senate. They may defeat one choice of the Executive, and oblige him to make another; but they cannot themselves CHOOSE, they can only ratify or reject the choice of the President. They might even entertain a preference to some other person, at the very moment they were assenting to the one proposed, because there might be no positive ground of opposition to him; and they could not be sure, if they withheld their assent, that the subsequent nomination would fall upon their own favorite, or upon any other person in their estimation more meritorious than the one rejected. Thus it could hardly happen, that the majority of the Senate would feel any other complacency towards the object of an appointment than such as the appearances of merit might inspire, and the proofs of the want of it destroy."

Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 66

"When I met with Senate leaders, we discussed our shared goal of making sure that the confirmation process is dignified."

Sounds like he only met with Repubs. What does a Democrat care about dignity?

Central American and Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement

More wage decreases for the U.S. worker.

No one in the adminstration mentions the degrading of average worker pay. Jobs that used to pay $50K now pay $36 or less.

Please ping me when he announces that we will begin to guard our northern & southern borders as well as we are guarding the borders around Iraq.

Also, please ping with ANY word from his mouth about the recent SCOTUS decision in regards to the American people losing their rights to own private property. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he swore to uphold the Constitution during his Oath of Office.

And one more, when he apoligizes to the Minutemen for labelling them as "vigilantes", instead of the true patriots that they are.

I know I am guilty of bashing our President on the above issues and wish that I didn't have to. These are just as important as the so-called WOT. We catch terrorists here in the USA (Lodi, CA), then merely deport them to Pakistan to continue their fight against our sons and daughters in Iraq.

Am I the only one that finds this just plain stupid? Am sure this post will get removed, but somebody has to say it.

No. I believe that President Bush is saying he will nominate someone who will faithfully interpret our Constitution. That person will also be in accordance "with mainstream of American law and American values" (which are those things he saw "mandated" in the 2004 election, not the whacko socialist ideas of the liberals).

The purpose of his mention of Ginsberg and Breyer was this: The Republicans hated their personal values, but voted in a timely manner anyhow, based on qualifications; you Dems should do the same.

No, President Bush isn't catering to anyone. He will stick by his principles. Don't let the word "mainstream" fool you. It means one thing to the liberals and their friends in the media. We know, along with President Bush, the values of the TRUE mainstream of America (which is there but which is grossly overlooked by the media).

I see no cause for worry. His address was right on target. He is with America's TRUE mainstream.

Pirate, I hope you're right.
Two things: I don't think I suggested the Prez was "catering" to anybody.

Invoking Ginsbug and Breyer as a signal that, we approved yours, now you approve ours...will NOT work with the Democrats, at all. They will still demagogue any nominee that they claim is out of the "American mainstream" (defined, as you said, the way THEY define it).

"I know I am guilty of bashing our President on the above issues and wish that I didn't have to." Words right out of my mouth.

If more FReepers would occasionally rip him a new one when he steps in it up to his knees perhaps some political analyists in the WH might suggest a few policy changes that would be beneficial to America instead of China and Mexico.

I get sick to my stomach when I see the excuses some people write. Like the idiotic, "it's all Bush's fault." Hell no, it's not his fault but he does have some advisors who need to be hung from the closest tree. Following their advice has got more people ticked off at him than the Republican Party can stand. Don't be blaming me when the next presidential election is won by the Dims.

I hope that you and all the members of your family lose your jobs to illegal aliens before the next election. Maybe that's what it will take for you to understand that speeches that omit serious subjects are political bullshit written for fools to flutter over.

President Bush hasn't read the Constitution since he took office and he is saying he will nominate someone who will faithfully interpret our Constitution. Keep fluttering.

His address was right on target for globalism!

**My nominee will be a fair-minded individual who represents the mainstream of American law and American values. The nominee will meet the highest standards of intellect, character, and ability, and will pledge to faithfully interpret the Constitution and laws of our country. Our nation deserves, and I will select, a Supreme Court justice that Americans can be proud of.**

These words almost sound as though they came from the mouth of a dimocrat.
