PITTSBURGH — A youth baseball coach paid one of his players to hurt an 8-year-old mentally disabled teammate so the boy wouldn't be able to play in a game, state police said Friday.

Mark R. Downs Jr. (search), 27, of Dunbar, offered one of his players $25 to hit the boy in the head with a baseball, police said. Witnesses told police Downs didn't want the boy to play in the T-ball game because of his disability.

The solicited player hit the boy in the head and in the groin with a baseball just before a game, and the disabled boy didn't play, police said.

Incredible, and he will only be banned from coaching if he is convicted of a crime.

That's one sick dude. Paying a kid to injure another kid? Bizarre, too.

Heard a father tell his son at a soccer game for the same aged kids to kick and hurt the good player on the opposing team. That was around 1999 in Shelbyville, TN.

In a T-ball league?

Why do I suspect that Mr. Downs has had a mullet haircut at some point in his life?

If he actually did this he should be charged, but the article doesn't say who the witnesses who saw them pay the kid are. I'll take it with a grain of salt until there's more information.

"Wow! Hope this evil jerk goes to prison soon!"

No then he just is another burden to society.

What needs to happen is that the dads of the kids on the team need to be men, get together and beat the shite out of this punk (the coach). I mean beat, bloody bonebreaking beating.

Then the guy, after he recovers, must do work for the family of the poor kid for a certain amount of time.

This is when a parent wants to go down on the field and bash the heck out of the coach....but the only thing that would do is get you jail time, and he would go free....

How sad that some brainless idiot seemed to have such little reguard for humans that he did this...he doesn't deserve to live....

God Bless the family of the boy that got beat up...

and the family of the boy that did this....your no better parents than the coach...

Let me guess...

Did he say that when was coaching at Notre Dame?

I don't remember him doing something like that when was at the Univ of Minnesota.

Crazy.

Downs was arrested and arraigned Friday on charges of criminal solicitation to commit aggravated assault, corruption of minors, criminal conspiracy to commit simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. He was released from jail on an unsecured bond.

Let's hope they nail him on all of it.

T-ball for God sake.

I can see violence erupting at really competitive youth sports events, but T-ball.

Man, I went and watched my niece in one game, the most painful sporting event I ever sat through. Funny as all get out, but painful to watch if you were expecting a game.

You have to have a serious mental disorder to get riled up over T-ball.
