I've read that sometimes people who shoot at an attacker end up shooting the attackers hand/weapon, rather than the attacker's center of mass (?) I wonder if that happened here, and if so, did it happen because the store owner failed to focus on the front sight.

In that state of mind he's lucky that he hit the guy at all, much less got a wild chance ricochet that plotted the junkie in his store.
Kudos to the guy, however it happened.
