China's second manned space mission - called Shenzhou VI - will launch in early October, a state newspaper has reported. This time, authorities will send two astronauts into space and they will orbit the Earth for five or six days.

"The manned spacecraft Shenzhou VI will ... preferably be launched in early October," Sun Weigang, director of the Space Department of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, told the China Daily.

China's first manned space flight two years ago made it the third country able to launch a human into space on its own, along with Russia and the United States.

Former fighter pilot, Yang Liwei, orbited the Earth for 21 1/2 hours in the Shenzhou V capsule before landing in northern China to a hero's welcome.

China's space programme still operates largely in secret. Yang's name was announced only shortly before his flight and the identities of 14 candidates for the next mission, all former air force fighter pilots, have not been released.

China hopes to set up a space station within five years and wants to land an unmanned probe on the moon by 2010.

Officials say they will also launch two scientific and experimental satellites by the end of the year, and a further two satellites in 2006 and 2007.

Are they going to have a trailing dragon on the craft?

Looks like China will make it back to space before we do.

This is yet another sign of the transition of power/wealth from one country (America) to another (China).

Maybe 20 years now, China will let Americans, selected at random from a Walmart shopping promotion, fly on their rockets.

Things are developing quickly now.

They are going to test us soon over Taiwan. Next 2-5 years probably. Particularlyt if a Hillary or other administration is elected that they believe will be less inclined to intervene.

There greatest obstacle is finding a way to eat rice with chop sticks in space.

I wonder how they overcome the urge to have the rocket explode in multicolors.

The Klinton family is close to the Chinese, but not clearly as close as another powerful family in the US. This family has a uncle that heads the US chamber of commerce in China, and a brother that was on the payroll of the son of Jaing Zemin. This family has had a member in the White House for 17 of the last 25 years.

I too think China will take Taiwan as well as resource-rich parts of Russia. I think they will wait until they acquire even more of our debt and more natural resources. Then they'll move, and we won't be able to do anything about it, regardless of who is president.

I am well aware of the Bush family ties to Red China. It is despicable IMHO. I wil say this, to this point, W has reacted strongly to Chinese blusterings over Taiwan, sending seven carriers there last time as a show of force. I believe the Red Chinese themselves believe he will act forcefully to intervene over Taiwan at this point.

I do not believe a follow-on demo admin will be nearly so inclined, and any waivering or dely will seal Taiwn's fate.

I agree whole heartidly with your last paragraph. That is their intent. I believe they will test that thesis over Taiwan relatively soon. If we fail to react and act strongly to save the free Republic of CHina on Taiwan...then Red China will move quickly to capitalize on the result...that they are the sole super power on the western rim and the nations in that area will see it and react accordingly to it.

I believe we are going to fight a very nasty, very costly war with Red China at some point in the not so distant future. Perhaps as nasty and costly a war as we have ever fought. Either that, or just roll over and suffer a fate even more nasty and costly.

Maybe a school teacher. Who teaches Mandarin to American kids.
