Bush waives restrictions on Palestinian aid

WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush formally waived U.S. restrictions on providing direct assistance to the Palestinian Authority on Thursday in a move that set the stage for spending $50 million on projects in the Gaza Strip.

The announcement came on the same day that a fragile Israeli-Palestinian cease-fire was imperiled, threatening disruptions to Israel's planned evacuation of settlers from occupied Gaza.

Israel launched a fourth air strike in the space of an hour in the Gaza Strip on Friday, witnesses said, hours after an Israeli woman was killed in a deadly rocket attack.

On May 26, during a visit to the White House by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Bush said the United States would provide $50 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority.

On Thursday, he issued a directive to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice formally waiving restrictions on providing money to the Palestinian Authority. He also notified the U.S. Congress of his decision.

The money is to be used for housing, roads, schools and health clinics in the Gaza. The administration had faced opposition to providing direct aid to the Palestinians from some members of Congress.

A senior Bush administration official said Bush determined the waiver was important to U.S. national security interests.

"Direct assistance at this crucial time directly supports the president's June 24, 2002, vision of two democratic states -- Israel and Palestine -- living side-by-side in peace and security and promotes our wider interests in the region," the official said.

Just another of these Bush-bashing threads just because he doesn't agree with your pet policies about Israel and the Arabs!

Not at all. I like Dubya a great deal. I think he's a wonderful human being. I just don't consider him nearly right wing enough. I consider him a centrist.

It's a myth that most Hispanic voters are opposed to good border security. Polls have shown otherwise.

__It's a myth? Hard-line opposition against illegal immigration decimated the GOP in California.

There's a reason why Hillary's casting herself (however disingenuously) as being strong on border security. She's evil, but she's not stupid

_____Border security must be mainained, but it has to be done carefully. The GOP needs the Hispanic vote. It can't go the way of the Afro-American vote.

To the Veterans Hospitals...making sure it only goes for patient care and rehab

Just talking about that yesterday.Besides giving tax money to terrorists, we give welfare to illegal immigrants and immigrants who are not yet citizens, yet our veterans receive substandard.

He's in his second term. He doesn't have to worry about re-election. This is the time for him to do as much conservative good as he can, and in many ways, he does, but in terms of our borders, the UN, and Israel, he is not doing what he could and should do.

"There are not enough pure rightwingers to be able to do that."

And in the next election there won't be enough Conservative Christians "rightwingers" to elect a wishy-washy centrist Republican in the mold of a Palestinian appeaser.

+++I hate to disillusion you, but very few voters are concerned with the Arab-Israeli issue at this point. Nor are they in the frame of mind to slander the President over it.

Gross hypocrisy: claiming to fight terrorism while supporting terrorism is a measure of a man. Trumps other issues.

No, the betrayal was from the British.

After WWI the British got a protectorate over the area called "Palestine" (it included what is today Israel and all of Jordan).

The area was promised to be a restored Jewish homeland.

In Arabia, the Hashemites and the Saudi clan were in competition. The British sided with the Wahabi Saudis (the reason for many of our problems today) and gave them Arabia. They then forced the Hashemites into other areas of the Mideast- including Iraq (again leading to our current problems).

The British then cut off 2/3 of the area of "Palestine" and simply gave it to the Hashemites as TransJordan-now simply Jordan.

Then even reneged on the other 1/3 for the Jews- dooming many to Hitler.

The Jews fought for their independence from the British, then fought Arab armies some trained and led by British officers.

Every problem in the Midwast can be traced back to the British perfidy- and of course Islam.

He was only Arafat's (who killed Americans including American diplomats) deputy for decades and was deeply involved with massacre at the Munich Olympics (try to pretend here that dead Jews count)

Umm maybe in your moderate mindset but in most Christian Churches Israel is sacred and very much paid attention to.

If Bush and the Republican party keep this up then many in the Christian community will seek an alternative.

Remember Christians don't serve politicians only God. And remember what happened to candidates Bush Sr. and Dole. Go the centrist moderate route and Christians stay home or seek an alternative.

Also remember a weak democrat candidate received over 59 million votes and 252 electoral votes.

Keep going the mushy middle route and eventually the Republicans will be road kill.

Was the California GOP trying to tighten border security? That's what I'm referring to.

No, this is proof that you would settle for any swill any politician would feed you so long as there is an "R" next to his name.

I didn't vote GOP just to see this president give money to terrorists, leave our borders standing wide open, increase the size of government, spend money like a teenager with a credit card and pander to every minority group he can think of. In other words, act like a liberal.

If you did, that's perfectly fine. Just don't pretend you're a conservative. You are nothing more than a groupie who is unable to tell the difference between legitimate criticism and "bashing." Go back to drawing hearts and "I luv Bush" in your notebooks and quit trying to convince anyone that you even know what conservatism is, much less that your idol President Bush stands for it.
