Just re-read what he said in that light. He didn't come this far with everything he's done to casually admit she wasn't undercover on CNN. It's just his dramatic way of speaking.

The contents of the question below indicates what he meant and what he said. If he couldn't comment on how long ago since she was clandestine, how can he comment that she wasn't clandestine that day? A no-comment applies to all questions within that scope.

covert; Not openly practiced, avowed, engaged in, accumulated, or shown.
Undercover; Performed or occurring in secret.
The point of all this is, he said what he said and he meant what he meant. He could have said any of the 3 words and he would have meant the same thing, she was none of the 3.
