Here's a plan I just came up with on the spur of the moment:

1. Load nuke in car
2. Drive downtown
3. KA_BOOM

What else is needed?

If you do that, you'll devastate a city. Pull it off in five or ten cities at about the same time, and you'll crash every Western economy. You're thinking checkers, and the bad guys are playing chess.

20 small nukes aren't gonna do it

Look what three airplanes crashing into buildings did to this country! The overreaction would be hyperactive, profound, and permanent. It would be even more senseless than the mindless overreactions to the 911 attack.

No they couldn't come sooner because the United States stopped a previous Al Qaeda attempt to hijack and crash 11 US airliners led by a man named Ramzi Yousef.

In January of 1995. Nearly seven years prior to the 9/11 attacks. It should also be noted that the early plans for the 9/11 attacks were found on Yousef's computer that was seized after he set his apartment ablaze.

So they had the plans for the 9/11 attacks all that time, they just couldn't do anything with them for seven years. Which means they didn't have the means (money, jihadis, training) until 2001. That's fine if you believe that. I don't.

Quite uncalled for. I could take you to horse farms in Kentucky where the latest in genetic engineering is applied to horses making more to stud one foal than you'll make this year. These farms are not owned by idiots, nor are the horses. I'm not from KY, but I find this kind of geo-insult something worthy of a ketchup heiress.

I have many questions as well, but I don't think it is safe or prudent to assume anything anymore and act as if this is impossible. Improbable????? Yes. Impossible? No way.

We are dealing with committed killers who we are STILL not prepared to deal with.

If someone told you 10 years ago we would be forced by a GOP president to accept 11 million illegal aliens in this country after 3000 citizens had died from illegal aliens with valid drivers licenses, would you believe it???????

There is much I really would find hard to believe, but you know what - they keep happening somehow!

Illegal aliens - Soldiers wearing gloves while holding the Koran - CFR - Etc etc.

As Michael Corleone said:

"If history has taught us anything, it is that anyone can be killed"

First it would crap up a substantial area. No container is going to hold the force of several pounds of high explosives. Second atomic bombs are not hydrogen bombs. hydrogen bombs need much more maintenance than a simple nuke.

Now that being said - if they had one it would have gone off by now. They would not risk losing it unused.

Precisely. A nuke in the financial district of NYC alone would manage to severely undercut our ability to keep the country afloat. Especially if it was a follow up to more 9/11 type attacks, bio attacks, multiple car bombs, etc.

What's the smallest number of people required to hide 20 suitcase nukes in perfect secrecy over several years with the necessary skills to maintain the technology and distribute them to 20 different locations?

One would do if he made several trips to the border. Larger numbers would be a risk. Of course, one might kill the delivery boys in order to maintain security. One guy could visit the storage sites on a rotating basis in order to perform routine maintenence.

See post 42 for why even fission weapons are not really a feasible man-portable weapon for anyone other than a true Nuclear Power.

There has to be some kind of data backup for Wall Street elsewhere.

You may be right about the power of any conventional explosives in the 'case, and even if it was a dud, it would amount to a dirty bomb, but that's assuming everything else inside the bomb was functioning, and as post 42 points out, the electronics are just as vulnerable to deterioration. A suitcase nuke can't live long without regular returns to a lab.

The 9/11 hijackers didn't sit around for years waiting for a secret signal from OBL. Rather, they were basically on their own and it was up to them to decide when to make their move.

Not a secret signal. The orders were given to Atta, who carried the message to cells already in place in the United States.

If you believe that the date was just randomly chosen by some semi-freelance terrorists, do you also believe that the 9/9/01 assassination of General Ahmed Shah Massoud (leader of the Northern Alliance) was a coincidence?

I'm more than happy to defer to Kentuckians when the subject of horse breeding comes up. I'm also sure your sod-growing technologies are state-of-the-art. Guess what? I don't care.

"Fifth column in our military?"

hmmmm. Can you explain this?

(or should I really be asking the man who transported a riverboat over a mountain in the jungle?)

Good point. They killed him because they knew we would need to build an alliance with the opposition Afghans... he was a charasmatic leader, they thought we couldn't get the job done without his help. Fortunately, they were wrong in that assumption.

So they had the plans for the 9/11 attacks all that time, they just couldn't do anything with them for seven years

They didn't have the plans. They had plans to hijack airliners and they had a desire to attack the WTC, but they hadn't merged the two, and they were focussed on other things, like bombing the Khobar Towers, bombing US embassies in East Africa, the Millennium Plot, the Cole, etc. The hijackers only entered the US months before the attacks -- they weren't sleepers, the plan wasn't in place years before.

Some of you guys are WAY off the deep end! There's a lot of crazy talk on this thread and wild assertions being made not to mention assumptions about the reality of this whole bidness that are stacking up to be moonbat country.

I'm going back to the Rove feeding frenzy...
