I like the way you think.

Yes, but illegals can go around or under walls. I suggest you drop the wall on them...

Excellent point! What can we do for counter-measures for underground/tunneling activity?

That's been proven since biblical times.

Actually, I think I read that the Israelis had developed a technology to help them find terrorist "tunnels" under thier walls. I think they had shared that techonology with our government. I will do a search...

I was wrong, I only found a series of articles on Israel and their efforts at such.

Well thank you : )

I think that if we use the resources that are readily available to us, we can cut costs down dramatically. Have you ever seen the CA aqueduct? Very deep. I could see something along those lines between two fences...electrified on our side. You make it past the crocs, and guess what??? So sorry Mohammed. Pass the Criss n' Pitts...

From the article: "Which is to say, the time to act is now. We need a defensible perimeter, perhaps a physical wall, to protect our northern as well as southern borders."

You've got to be kidding. The Mexican/US border is roughly 1,000 miles long. The Canada/US border roughly double that. I'd agree with having a fence, at least for the length of the borders. But the cost of an Israeli style wall would be prohibitive. And if that's all you do, it would ultimately prove to be worthless. People seeking to enter the U.S. illegally would go by boat or plane.

Also from the article: "Walls are not the only solution to America's looming homeland security crisis. We should also develop some system for figuring who's in this country - and who shouldn't be in this country. The most obvious solution is a national ID card, combined with a serious rethink of immigration-law policy and enforcement."

The need to seriously re-think of immigration law and enforcement is beyond obvious. But why this knee-jerk urge to impose some sort of orwellian national ID?

The plain truth is that law enforcement is already able to search out and arrest those who illegally enter this country. What's lacking are the resources and political will to actually do anything about it after that point.

As it stands, the vast majority of non-Mexican illegals arrested are let go on the promise that they'll return for an immigration (deportation) hearing later. Predictably, few ever show up. We should detain these folks, but the jails to hold them in don't exist.

"But the cost of an Israeli style wall would be prohibitive."

Nonsense. An Israeli-style wall would cost far, far less, mile for mile, than an interstate highway, for example. The cost of such a wall would be negligible as a percentage of our gigantic federal budget. The problem is political, not economic.

They won't work at airports. But by all means build one across the Southern Border, the Northern Border too for that matter.

Heck, it'll provide a lot of jobs for a while, and some forever.

Many are not aware of this. Worth repeating.
