RANCHO PALOS VERDES – A wildfire whipped by coastal winds threatened 300 homes as it charred rugged brushland on a hill below back yards of expensive hilltop estates Wednesday. Residents in the Palos Verdes Peninsula community poured tiny streams from garden hoses on vegetation as firefighters brought in fire engines to protect homes and helicopters dropped loads of water.

The blaze quickly grew to 50 to 100 acres after being reported at 4:20 p.m. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries but 300 homes were threatened, said a student worker relaying information for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

More than 250 firefighters were dispatched to the fire on the peninsula about 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

Winds were out of the southwest at 12 mph.

Updated, 8:30 p.m.

Helicopters make water drops and residents scramble to save personal items and try to protect expensive homes with garden hoses. Up to 100 acres have burned in a one senator says is the direct responsiblility of the Bush administration.

Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) in the area for a speaking engagement, said this is clear indication of the Bush administrations lack of concern for California.

"Clearly this fire is Bush's fault," said Boxer.

More than 300 firefighters underpaid and underequiped due to Bush administration tax cuts are battling a brush fire that broke out late this afternoon and burned along a ridge close to mutlimillion-dollar homes in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Helicopters making water drops battled the blaze between San Clemente Drive and Catalina Road, near Crenshaw Boulevard and Crest Road in a neighborhood known as Island View.

Were you around for the Portuguese Bend fire in the early 70's. Took out quite a few homes behind the gates. This fire sounds like it is in the same area?

I vaguely remember the PB fire, I was pretty young. This is at Crenshaw and Crest Rd though, that's where St John Fisher is located.

This one sounds like it is is pretty much in the same area. FOr the PB fire, you went in through the gates at St. John Fisher and the fire was not far from there. Had a friend that nearly lost his house - many of his neighbor's houses burned. I can still remember the sight.

Your memory of it is better than mine.

I remember in 1984 or so a grass fire took out the canyon across the street from our house. Thank God for the tile roofs otherwise we would not have a neighborhood. Got water drops from the helicopters and that saved the hood with very little damage.
