It's Venus vs. Mars for Singles at Weddings (This summer, hide your bridesmaids.)

NEW YORK — This summer, hide your bridesmaids.

So warns the promo for this weekend's new movie, "Wedding Crashers", which is about a couple of bachelors who show up at weddings uninvited to prey on lonely bridesmaids and especially desperate female guests.

The movie cashes in on two common stereotypes about weddings: that women hate attending nuptials alone, and that men, realizing how vulnerable weddings make single women feel, use the occasions to their advantage.

But how are true are these generalizations?

Like most things, it's just more enjoyable to go to a special occasion with someone else. I'm not sure gender has much to do with it.

Getting "hooked up" at a wedding, though--that's a little weird..

The thing is, when a wedding is run correctly, NO singles, who aren't engaged, or about to be, are allowed to bring a date.

It is tragic. It is a direct sign that the person is trying to have more wedding than they can afford. If you invite a 17+ year old person you must expect they have a significant other. If you can't afford to invite both, don't invite them. It is tacky.

Just remember this one thing: all guys (yes, even us married ones) are thinking about one thing for the most part when we are interacting with women. It ain't pretty, but it's the truth.

*All* women?? :-P

Good grief! Navol Mein Fuhr!

Remind me not to attend any of your weddings! I think I'd feel like I'm in a POW Camp.

I can see how you would. I just remembered that I did attend a wedding alone. It was 2 years almost to the month after my husband died. The wedding was that of a former employee of mine. I had always teased her about getting married when I was her boss. I could not turn it down.

I did cry. It made me think of my wedding. However, I was so happy for her. I had the rest of my staff who attended to sit with at the wedding and the reception. They made it much easier on me. One couple even dragged me onto the dance floor to do some kind of line dance to rock. I had never done that before, and felt silly, but I had a good time with them. It was the going home alone that was so hard.

Amen AND Hear Hear. ...but since my fiancee will likely soon be reading this thread I must state for the record that you were replying to someone else's quote, not mine.

How strongly do you really feel about a friend that you would force to attend your wedding unaccompainied?

Well, I will tell you, not all men. I had one that wanted money. That hurt. I got over it.

However, the rest, yep, that was all they wanted. It was very disappointing to say the least. No one wanted to get to know me. I was taken in by only one, and he was smart. He pretended to like me and want to get to know me. He was also much younger. Good thing I have a great big very protective dog with quite a set of teeth!

Amen! They must know they are window dressing. The only POSSIBLE exception is an extremely small wedding! Good luck with your wedding!

How many bouncers are you going to have for the dates of people you invite?!?!

Um, well... I'm half cajun and half middle Georgia redneck, so it's not DATES that I am worried about prompting the need for bouncers. :)

And what percentage of weddings do you suppose are run "correctly?" I dare say the percentage is small.

As for myself, I certainly celebrate the institution of marriage. I'm in a 26-year happy one myself. But I hate weddings. I find them almost as depressing as funerals. Having talked to numerous other men who feel the same way, it's easy to believe that most men who go to a wedding by themselves must have a very good reason to do so. :-)

Halle Petro, 26, an aspiring actress and singer who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., said she deliberately didn't invite her boyfriend (now ex) to a wedding because she had her eye on someone else who was going.

*cough*whore*chough*

Sorry, does anyone have a lozenge?

So, it doesn't hurt when we're just after your body? ;-}

Well, yeah, if you don't even want to know me it does. I am not giving out my body, either, ya know! I have some pride even if I am a woman of "a certain age" now. However, if someone just wants your money and fakes interest in you hoping to get it, well..... How would you feel?

How would you feel?

Well, that would all depend on how hot she is. Please refer to previous posts for an explaination of this most recent comment. All men are pigs, and we like it.

I live in the sticks of E. Tx. I just hit the big 5-0.. but look younger...so I haven't had any lack of dates. My prob has been finding someone that isn't intrigued with having 10 others on the string at the same time. I don't share well. *laugh* I'm not attracted to prissy men or bubbas either. Really narrows the field! :) Don't give up! It just takes ONE.
