The number of abortions performed in Minnesota dropped to a 30-year low last year, to 13,788, state health officials reported Tuesday.
The annual total dropped below 14,000 for the first time since 1975, down from a high of 19,028 in 1980.
The report, from the Minnesota Department of Health, did not speculate on the reasons for the decline. But it showed that the abortion rate also dropped, to 11.6 abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age, the lowest rate since 1975...

Praise the Lord!
I'm sure Planned Parenthood is upset about that. How much revenue has this cost them?
Can anybody give us some credible explanation of why more moms are going for live birth, Deo gratias?
Bushs fault.
"Praise the Lord!"...
...amen
Teen pregnancies are down about 30% since 1990 although we still lead the Western world. Teens have the highest rate of abortions so a drop in teen pregnancies effects the abortion rate in addition to the abortion numbers.
Even now with all the birht control available, about one third of women get pregnat by the age of 20 with 80% being unplanned.
The article says the highest rate of abortions in MN is in the 20-29 age group. I believe that's generally true nationwide.
Ridiculous. Republicans have abortions and I'm sure not all Democrats murder their unborn. Or else there would be no more Democrats left.
Inane generalities make us look like wackos.
duh
Not so ridiculous. In the '04 election, 26 of the 27 fastest growing counties in the US voted heavily Republican. The dying counties are Democrat counties. Birth/Death rates figure in to these numbers along with migration of residents.
I don't know if women 20-29 could really have a higher abortion rate than teens.... that would be horrifying if true. Nationwide over a third of teen pregnacies end in abortion. This source says 40% but my paper sources say it has declined to the mid 30's.

I have to take a step back to even talk about those kind of numbers...if I stop to think what it means I get sick.
It's ridiculous to assert that no Republican women have abortions.
My guess is that there is less stigma attatched to being a single mother than to having an abortion. I thought that it was a rural thing in WA State, but apparently, it's not just a local phenomonon.
It makes sense that twenty somethings would have the most abortions; they are probably the most sexually active before marriage. Many teens who begin having sex very early are inner city girls for whom having a child out of wedlock poses no social stigma.
Girls who wait a longer are probably college or college-bound girls. Their socio-economic group frowns a bit more on out of marriage birth, and they have greater career and educational goals. I think I have read most abortions are to college-educated women.
Not defending it, but the stats make sense.
Yes. "Republican" girls/women, "Christian" girls/women, "Catholic" and "conservative" girls/women abort babies too. Some, because they are disposing of the evidence of immoral, unmarried sexual relations, of which they feel very much conflicted or ashamed. Or for a dozen other reasons or non-reasons.
Some would be astounded, perhaps, at the number of pro-abort Republicans. I am no longer astounded. I read them every all the time even here at FR. It chills my soul.
But back the good news. Are we seeing a revival of chaste behavior before marriage, and generous, baby-welcoming love IN marriage? Are we seeing pro-life churches engaging the issues more effectively? Is it related to some kind of public policy changes, like parental consent? Are the pregnancy-aid groups turning people around with their 4-D real-time baby imaging equipment? Is it just an upsurge in good-heartedness, a sense of fair play, even a sense of live-and-let-live? If so, why?
Let's find out what works, and then do a whole lot more of it.
Generally, I think the younger generation is turning a bit more conservative. Though there is a great deal of sexual activity, too. I was in college in the 80's--a "conservative" time--and there was a lot of sexual activity then too! All of my female friends are now either stay at home moms or part timers, most are Republican. But not a one was a virgin on her wedding day and a couple had abortions. Only difference from my mom's generation is that her friends had to get married!
Good News!
