The real Rove scandal: If you can't shoot the messenger, take aim at his wife.
LA Times ^ | July 12, 2005 | Robert Scheer

Posted on 07/12/2005 3:31:58 PM PDT by Crackingham

That clearly was the intent of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove in leaking to a reporter that former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV's wife, Valerie Plame, was a CIA agent. To try to conceal the fact that the president had lied to the American public about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program, Rove attempted to destroy the credibility of two national security veterans and send an intimidating message to any other government officials preparing to publicly tell the truth.

Rove's lawyer now says that Rove didn't break the law against naming covert agents because he didn't know Plame's name and therefore couldn't have revealed it. Perhaps he can use such a technicality in court, but in the meantime he should resign immediately — or be fired by the president — for leaking classified information, trying to smear Wilson and possibly endangering Plame's life.

"The White House promised if anyone was involved in the Valerie Plame affair, they would no longer be in this administration," said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). "I trust they will follow through on this pledge."

The background on this story is crucial. Ambassador Wilson had been honored as a patriot by President George H.W. Bush for standing up to Saddam Hussein in a face-to-face confrontation in Baghdad on the eve of the Persian Gulf War. But in 2003, Wilson committed an unpardonable crime in the eyes of the second Bush White House. He exposed its lies about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction programs.

IT WAS JUST REPORTED ON FOX CABLE NEWS THAT HER NAME WAS ON HER HUSBAND'S WEBSITE AND HE ID'ED HER THERE AS WORKING FOR THE CIA, THIS BEFORE ROVE SPOKE WITH THE REPORTER(S).

Nice of Fox News to catch up with FR. That was reported on FR back in 2003 when the controversy first erupted.

Wilson told the panel he may have been confused and may have "misspoken" to reporters. The documents -- purported sales agreements between Niger and Iraq -- were not in U.S. hands until eight months after Wilson made his trip to Niger.

Got a feeling the dems are running scared right now on this. Some of the smarter ones realize they are already beginning to twist in the wind. The rest are just useful idiots spewing....like the guy that was just on Hannity & Colmes.

He was GREAT with Blitzer, even thought Wolf was spitting all over his answers, trying to get those Dem talking point out there.

That get faxed every morning to all news' organizations according to ED Hill on Fox & Friends this morning. They even fax them to her and all Fox News folks (the so-called Republican mouthpieces according to what what's his face said during the White house press briefing today). lol! It was either David Gregory or Terry Moran. I can't remember which *ss it was.

Hi, I'm back. Of necessity I was at a church meeting, which was good for me; calms me and keeps me from going ballistic.

I got home just in time to see the end of the Bond fiasco. Ugh. My husband had gone to bed (and it's only 8:30 here) because he couldn't take it. I think Bill Press about gave him a stroke.

Interesting that David Gregory didn't look happy tonight. Perhaps he is realizing how big a fool he made of himself.

I have decided who Scott McClellan reminds me of: Boo Boo Bear (Yogi's sidekick). I am probably revealing my age. HA!

I am beginning to think that Scott is out there like Boo Boo...sort of nice and naive and trying to do the right thing; meanwhile, the reporters are like the Ranger ...trying to save that pic-a-nic basket.

Karl Rove is Yogi.

Well, I think it is a good analogy. LOL!

I'm thinking this whole mess might play into W's hands after all, like a media rope-a-dope. As long as Rove is really clean, this is the equivalent of Al Quaeda suicide bombers sitting in the offices of ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, the NY Times, LA Times, Washington... you get the idea. And I can't wait to witness the network ratings and circulation deaths of all of these enemy networks & newspapers that are knowingly trying to ruin Rove, reporting lies to ruin the right and protect the left.

This country has been long overdue a good media housecleaning and I welcome it with open arms.

"He is married to the former Valerie Plame and has two sons and two daughters."

Geeze - guess she had covert pregnancies, eh?

That's a pretty good analogy except I think you'd have to import a villain from another cartoon to more suitably represent the press- maybe the Tazmanian Devil or that little chicken hawk in the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons who was constantly asking, "Is that a chicken?"

Question is, why in the world did Dick Cheney send this Wilson guy to Niger in the first place? Why did they need anything HE would come up with?

That's the point. Rove warned off Cooper from writing an inaccurate article. Cheney didn't send Wilson, his wife did.
