A few years ago, I was taking my NRA pistol instructor's course, and one of the students was a naturalized American from Nicaragua. At the time, California was trying to decide if the AR-15 series fell under the "assault weapons" definition, and during a break, several of us discussed whether it would be right to register such a rifle if the law so required.
The gentleman from Nicaragua listened for a while, and then asked "Are you guys nuts? Don't you know anything about history? Never register your guns -- they'll just come around and take them. And you can never let them take your guns -- there's only one reason for that."
He had the idiomatic "they and them" all figured out, but he's right. Too bad more of our own native-born urban hoplophobes can't follow the logic, or at least read a history book.
