Mind-numbed Robot, you were here on FR, when this crackpot theory was firsted offered up, and during the resulting discrediting of it. Padilla was a broke 24 year old Taco Bell employee ex-convict gangbanger at the time.

My forgetter works better than my rememberer but IIRC the debunking was along the line mentioned in the links provided here - attempts by the government to discredit their version of events. No one has been able to discredit the eyewitnesses other than to just claim it didn't happen that way.
