I look forward to all those pro-life freepers defending the president on this one.
Clearly, social conservatives are good enough to raise money, work themselves to the bone to get a candidate elected, and turn out in record numbers...but at the end of the day, they aren't important enough to honor a campaign promise.
Roe is here to stay.
At least the Democrats are honest about it.
Not just Roe...I think Gonzales will be a disaster on property rights, religious issues, guns, and many other issues as well.
However, I'll at least hold some hope in Brownback's decision/recommendation. Maybe he can talk Bush out of it. Or-as some have suggested, maybe Gonzales won't be so bad (but I doubt that.)
Gonzales - Spanish for "Souter."
Dubya, where's this "conservative constitutionalist in the mold of Scalia or Thomas" you're talking about? Or does the fact that Gonzales is your friend trump that? Leave him as AG, he can't do (as) much damage there. Give us someone better for SCOTUS.
I'd say the announcement of this meeting is a test of us real conservatives to see our reaction. If it's hot enough, this nomination will not happen.
President George W Bush
bttttt
At best, Gonzales will be another O'Connor.
If Dubya nominates Gonzales, that's the last straw and I'm done with the R party. I'll change my party affiliation to "none." I'd sooner sit in my cave and watch the moss grow than lift another finger to help the squishy bunch of cowardly centrists. That goes doubly for Dubya.
At least if the Dems get back in power, the revolution will come more quickly. It seems by electing Republicans, we simply prolong the agony and, since things don't get as bad as quickly, it probably means the boiling point moves higher. Always remember the frog in the pot of water on the stove; if you don't want him to jump out, keep the heat low. That's the Republican way to socialism.
Bush may think that, as a lame duck, he can spit in his base's eye and not pay for it. He is mistaken. This will completely kill the momentum he has built up over the past four years, wreck Republican chances in the midterm election, and undermine the next Republican candidate in 2008, now matter how well established his conservative credentials may be.
It's a deal breaker. It will be ten or twelve years before conservative Catholics and Evangelicals forget such a betrayal, since it would only be the last of a long string of betrayals.
People revere the name of Ronald Reagan. They will not revere the name of G. W. Bush. Liberals will continue to mock Bush as an idiot, and there will be no one to defend him.
Karl Rove has been a constant supporter of the RINO, country club, pro-abortion wing of the party. I thought he had finally learned his lesson, but evidently not. No, if this nomination goes forward, there will be no forgiveness.
Deja Vu "Read my lips - I'm pro-life"
Here is where we need the raw ambition of politicians to help us.
If Brownback wants to be Prez., he needs to cut loose here and do what the brazenly ambitious would do: interview Gonzales, then walk out and hold a press conference denouncing him as a moderate and declaring that he will lead the conservative charge to defeat Gonzales, if nominated.
Brownback would then become a champion of the right, would likely become the frontrunner among the conservatives...and more importantly, Gonzales would lose.
I don't know if Brownback has the stones to take on the establishment this way.
It might be time for Dr. Coburn to step up to the plate.
"Calling Dr. Coburn...Calling Dr. Coburn...!!!"
Get real guys and stop your delusion and savage attacks on the President. Even if we have 9 Scalia and Thomas on the SCOTUS Roe Vs. Wade will never be overturned, never, ever. The best we can get are Supreme Court judges that prevent further baby killing laws from being implemented.
I think we should wait and see who he nominates before getting out the pitch forks. All this is, is pure speculation
Hope this is a smokescreen
BOHICA!!!
I'll keep my trap shut until the decision is made.
Yep! As of now I think that we are going to get screwed again. And later on I have a feeling I will know we have been screwed again.
Heck, we have been screwed so many times since November, 2004,one more won't make a difference.
'06 and '08 are coming.
It's time to end this charade.
If Bush is not seriously considering Gonzales, his people need to send out clear signals to that effect.
If he is seriously considering Gonzales, he is on the verge of a massive political blunder.
I think he is smarter than that.
If President Bush is indeed planning to nominate Mr. Gonzales he needs to think again. Right now his support from gun owners is somewhat soft. If he were to nominate Gonzales, who has a record of antipathy toward the Second Amendment, this could alienate gun owners to the point of no return.
I have only to refer to the presidential campaign of 1992, when Bush 41 was not on good terms with the NRA. His adviser at the time, the usually astute (and now late) Lee Atwater, is reputed to have advised the elder Bush not to actively seek the endorsement of gun owners. He evidently felt that gun owners would blindly vote Republican no matter what. He reportedly said, "Where else are they going to go?" That was the signal for Billy Jeff to break out the hunting clothes and the shotgun for photo ops to try to fool the voters into thinking he was pro-gun. Enough gun owners either voted for Billy Jeff, voted for Ross Perot, or sat on their hands, with the result that we got eight years of Slick Willie and Shrillery.
The Republicans would be well-advised to be more vocal in their support of the rights of law-abiding gun owners and the Second Amendment. Nominating Gonzales for the highest court in the land is NOT the way to reassure gun owners.
serious question. assuming that W turns RINO on us and appoints gonzalez, who can we support in 08 to make sure that the bench gets filled with true conservative judges, and no more Souters?
after all, Stevens and Ginsburg will have to die at some point, depsite their deal with the devil.
if Bush gives in to the liberals now, we need to make sure this doesn't happen again. What about Orrin Hatch? Or can we pull Ashcroft into the race?
im very worried that Bush is too much like his father, and think that's definitely the case with Jeb. No more RINOS!
Brownback is just talking to him in case.
I highly doubt Gonzales will be the pick.
Of course, I would be pissed if he is, but I don't think it is going to happen.
You are reading way too much into this and using it for your anti-Bush agenda.
