How about that.
Huh? Guess I'm behind. I hadn't heard this.
What kind of gun is that? Rounds look larger than 7.62x39. 7.62x54? I would imagine a bear to control at full auto if so.
Russian? He has a 101st Airborne patch on his shoulder, but why the UN hat? It's been many years since I have been in, but is his weapon a SAW?
looks like a pecheneg lightened up for special ops/airborne use
Looks like a PK.
Russian? He has a 101st Airborne patch on his shoulder, but why the UN hat?==
It look like russian VDV hat (vozhdushno-desatnie voiska) means russian air-borne troopers. Exactly the analog of speciality of 101 division:). Maybe it is suveneer?
Guy looks like russians and his gun looks like famous PKM ( Kalashnikov machine gun).
Could it be that he is one of those Brooklyn Russian prior service immigrant's who joined the 82nd for quick citizenship?

WHo knows:). Guy with beret resembles one russian popular actor. His beret looks like russian VDV (air-borne trooper) beret.
Gun is PKM in my opinion in its new last decade modification. I see it in form of barrel end.
SO may be:).
The beret does appear to be the kind worn by a Russian paratrooper or of the UN, but the patch seems to be a combination of the 101st Screaming Eagles with a Russian flag above that. It may be he is a Russian attached as an obersver, which doesn't surprise me. I know they are helping us in the WOT in ways we are not hearing. We'll know more once JB6 takes a look.
The weapon is after my time, but it definately appears to be the PKM as found on the web at: http://www.sovietarmy.com/small_arms/pk.html
I agree he's Russian. He's clearly using "non standard" clothing - but looking beyond that, he's either a bona fide VDVer or perhaps Spetsnaz.
Well, is it official troops from Russia or is it a mercenary? It is no surprise if it was a mercenary.
The flag is an Iraqi flag above the 101st patch. My guess is he's an observer.
Not UN, he has a matching striped shirt.
I missed the striped shirt. That said, we agree he is a Russian paratrooper, and is likely attached to the airborne unit of the 101st. That however does not explain the Russian machine gun, which I cannot imagine an observer carrying while attached to an American unit. THS MACHINE GUN DOES NOT COMPUTE.
I believe it is a PKS most probably from Ukraine and part of the boatload Saddam bought.
The machinegun is a SAW. Now the assault rifle in the first photo is Russian.
