UPDATE! North Beirut explosion kills one

An explosion has injured the outgoing Lebanese defence minister, killed one person and wounded several others.

Police said Elias Murr was taken to hospital with minor wounds and one of his bodyguards was seriously injured.

Television footage showed two wrecked vehicles and a bloodied casualty in severe shock being helped from a car.

Lebanon has seen a string of bombings against anti-Syrian opposition figures since last year. Mr Murr by contrast is a staunch supporter of Syria.

The blast, which one report says was a car bomb, appeared to target Mr Murr's motorcade in the Christian suburb of Antelias, near a major highway in northern Beirut.

Mr Murr is the son-in-law of pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud and has been put forward as a loyalist representative in the cabinet being formed after the opposition victory in recent elections.

String of attacks

Syrian forces left Lebanon after the assassination of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in February.

Many Lebanese blamed Syria or its supporters in Lebanon for Hariri's death, a charge which Syria has strongly denied.

Elections following the withdrawal of Syria's troops and intelligence services handed victory to the Future movement led by Hariri's son and political heir Saad Hariri.

The latest blast came as Prime Minister-designate Fouad Siniora continued talks to build a coalition.

It follows a month after leftist politician George Hawi and journalist Samir Qasir, both from the anti-Syrian camp, were killed in separate bombings.

Correspondents say those attacks re-ignited anti-Syrian feeling in Lebanon after the opposition's success in elections.

So is this an anti-Syrian terror attack or is it the Syrian's bombing one of their own to win support among the Lebanese and allow Syrian troops back into Beirut?

Probably the former but really it is anybody's guess.

He survived, so it wasn't the Syrians.

I have to admit, this whole thing was a surprise to me. I'd thought the only bombing expertise in Lebanon was in the hands of Hizballah, yet in the past couple of weeks, we've seen Hizballah leaders and now their Syrian sponsors targeted as well.

Where are anti-Hizballah and anti-Syrian elements getting their bomb training? Is it old-timers from the Civil War?

At least they're so far using their bombs to target specific enemy individuals, rather than crowds of civilians. More than you can say for the Hizballah terrorists!
