The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Terrorists could be just getting started
Full Story

New York City and Washington. Bali, Indonesia; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Istanbul, Turkey; Madrid, Spain. And now London.

When will it end? Where will it all lead?

The experts aren't encouraged. One terrorism researcher sees the prospect of "endless" war. Adds the man who tracked Osama bin Laden for the CIA, "I don't think it's even started yet."

It is necessary and right to be patient

We announce our Organization of Al Qaeda of Jihad is not responsible for the operation yesterday in Baghdad at Jadida (operation that has cost the life of dozens of children).

The way of the Organization of Al Qaeda of Jihad is known to all, the way of the organization is fighting against the enemies of Allah among the Crusaders and their servants among the army and the police.

And our Sheikh Abou Mouss'ab, that Allah guides his shots and strengthens him on the truth, and protects him from aiming at the crowds of people, he is very devoted, and he himself directly coordinates each operation, that Allah blesses and rewards him.

LONDON BOMBS: SUICIDE ATTACKS WORST-CASE SCENARIO SAYS TERRORISM EXPERT

The Hague, 13 July (AKI) - If last Thursday's deadly blasts on central London's transport system prove to be suicide attacks, that would be be the "worst scenario" as these would be the first suicide bombings to occur in Europe, Edwin Bakker, a senior terrorism researcher at the Hague-based Netherlands Institute of International Relations told Adnkronos International (AKI) in an interview. He believes there could be some 50 active jihadist cells in Europe who may be planning similar attacks.

"If it emerges that the London bombings were suicide attacks carried out by jihadists, this would be the worst scenario, in terms of what it would do to society and what it means for the future," said Bakker. "Jihad is very bad for social and inter-group relations," he emphasised.

British police believe the bombings - which killed at least 52 people and injured 700 - were carried out by four young Muslim men, all of whom died in the blasts. All these men, aged between 19 and 30, were British-born and of Pakistani origin with no convictions or known terrorist involvement and lived an outwardly ordinary life in the Leeds area of West Yorkshire in northern England.

Italy warned of terror attacks

Terrorists plan to strike in near future, two warnings say

(ANSA) - Brescia, July 13 - Terrorists plan to strike Italy in the near future, an Islamic militant has warned counter-terrorism investigators in this northern city .

Brescia Prosecutor Roberto di Martino said he had been warned of an imminent action while investigating an attack planned in Milan, for which two militants were convicted on Wednesday .

"In recent days, I and my colleague were in Morocco where we met with a number of these individuals [Islamic extremists]," said the prosecutor .

"One told us we could expect something similar to what happened in Spain very soon," he said, referring to the 2004 Madrid rail bombings, in which 191 people died .

The disclosure comes a day after a similar warning by a Senegalese radical Muslim cleric, who was deported from Italy as a security threat two years ago .

Speaking from Dakar in a phone interview with the Sky TG24 station, he said an action would strike Italy in the near future .

"Within six months Italy will be subject to a chemical attack. Now is the time to strike Berlusconi and this will happen shortly," said Abdul Qadir Fadlallah Mamour. "The cities that could be hit are symbolic ones: Rome, Milan, Bologna and Venice. The weapons will be non-conventional ones such as nerve gas, which current Italian security measures are unable to detect." The imam put the timeframe for the attack at between a few weeks and six months, depending on the group involved .

"If carried out by the Abu Hafs Al Masri brigade, which claimed responsibility for Madrid and London, then it could happen within six months," he said. "But if a rival group is responsible, then it could take place in the space of a few weeks." Mamour, an imam in the northern Italian town of Carmagnola before his deportation, said it was pointless seeking out the militants in Italy as "they will come from the Balkans, Germany or France" .

Mamour lived in Italy for 11 years before being expelled after correctly forecasting a terror attack on Italian troops in Iraq. Nineteen Italians died in the November 2003 suicide bomb attack .

The Olympics Represent the Best of Western Civilization

[www.CapMag.com] The return of the Olympic Games to the country of their birth is an appropriate reminder of their deeper meaning. The Ancient Greeks founded the games because they valued the spectacle of a great athlete striving for victory. But the veneration of athletic achievement is not a quality one finds in all human cultures. Why did the games begin in Ancient Greece as opposed to, say, Ancient Egypt? And why were they revived in 19th-century Europe, rather than, say, Medieval Europe?

The answer lies in a rarely recognized aspect of the Olympics--and of major athletic competitions more broadly: their moral significance.

Another worrisome issue with regard to the Olympics is the winter olympics coming up in Italy *this* year.

yup. They have mentioned too many times that Italy may be the first, i suspect because of their geographical position surrounded by all of that water since the jihadis say it will be by land, sea and air.

Thanks pez for the refresher, but you're not making me feel any better! Like they said a year ago first England, then Italy, working their way up to us.

Looks like the current fellow went to the Raleigh campus, which is the state capitol.

Khalid S. M. went to the North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in Greensboro as an engineering major. Interesting article here:

To bounce around a bit here, reminder from the last thread:

World Will Observe 60th Anniversary of Atom Bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6; Author Details How Story Was Released That Morning

Atlanta author Noel Griese details how the story of the first wartime use of the atom bomb at Hiroshima was announced to the world from the White House at an 11 a.m. news conference on Aug. 6, 1945. Eban Ayers handed out the press release to reporters while President Harry S Truman was returning to the United States from the Potsdam Conference aboard the battle cruiser Augusta.

Atlanta (PRWEB) July 11, 2005 -- On Aug. 6, the world will observe the 60th anniversary of the first wartime use of an atom bomb. The target of the bomb, dropped from a B-29 named Enola Gay, was Hiroshima. The 9,000-pound bomb, nicknamed Little Boy, along with a second weapon, Fat Man, dropped at Nagasaki a few days later, brought World War II to a quick end.

The story of Hiroshima was announced to the world at 11 a.m. on Aug. 6, 1945. Acting Press Secretary Eben Ayers at the White House in Washington distributed the news release that electrified America and the rest of the world. In it, President Harry Truman, actually at sea on an American battle cruiser, said that an atom bomb had been dropped 16 hours earlier over Hiroshima.
