Insurgents and their supporters have created a sophisticated network on the Internet to help them recruit suicide bombers to Iraq, according to interviews with terrorism experts and a review of the online material.

"The same way the Internet has revolutionized life in the United States, it's also revolutionized the business of terrorism," Kohlmann says. "The same way we've jumped on the Internet, they have, too."

My Political Crime & Terrorism teacher sent this email as required reading, I was surprised to see that it wasn't already posted.

Technology question: if they can find an IP address, can they locate the actual computer?

Kind of. It can be a little tricky sometimes esp when you start playing around with Internet cafe's and other countries.

Its not that simple. An IP address reflect packet switching not circuit switching so its not like having a phone number and tracking down the Central Office (CO). Now I'm sure that most hackers (the loyal patriotic kind) can track these vermin filled sites and launch a DDOS (distributed denial of service attack)and the national intelligence agencies can do likewise. In fact the Al Jazeera site was hacked recently so lets do what we need to do folks :)

I am sure that their are many covert methods and traps set by the good guys to "recruit" terrorists.

I am also sure that sometimes it is better to let them think they are getting away with something, to see where they go, who they attempt to communicate with.

A high level of distrust among themselves is to our advantage as well. Who do they trust? not so easy a thing to tell anymore I bet.

I know there are silent heros that may never be able to tell their story. And I am sure they have saved many lives too.

I've seen a PowerPoint presentation used to train snipers, that has been translated to English. They are not all complete idiots.

Your first point is taken well, but the second doesn't fly.

From the article: In the past three months, more than 200 suicide bombings have occurred in Iraq, according to news accounts. In the first year of the conflict, fewer than 70 suicide bombings occurred.

These websites are working. We aren't foiling many of the bombings. We don't have the capability to follow everyone entering Iraq and see if they are about to blow themselves up, it just isn't possible to stop it all.

Given some of the PP presentations I've sat through, I'm not so sure...

This seems to argue for the 'Europe as the emerging heart of Islamic Terrorism' theory.

It's obviously Bush's fault terrorists know how to use the internet. This is the final straw. We are doomed. We need to get out of Iraq now.
