Naa, they didn't forget. I've seen this same style headline from AP many times. They really mean to imply this idiot is being sentenced simply for stealing the cell phone. Any '3rd strike' story goes the same way...life for shoplifting! Oh the injustice! Rarely mentions strikes one and two.
... and battery.
BTW, "steal" could mean shoplifting, or burglary or a number of other things. Robbery, which this is a case of, always includes assault, i.e., the crime of putting a reasonable person in fear of death or great bodily harm. A more accurate headline would say "Chronic Felon Gets 99 Years for Robbery and Battery".
...and all previous convictions that led to him being dubbed a "habitual criminal."
The mainstream media sure has a special way with words.;)
Forget the assault. This guy clearly needed to be put away for life even without it.
