Time For Questions (Today's crazy Press happenings on Rove)
fishbowlDC ^ | 7/11/2005 | Garrett Graff

Contention reigns today at the White House press briefings. After many rounds of questions re: Rove, David Gregory said that Scott McClellan's stonewalling was "ridiculous."

For anyone who is following the Plame story closely, particularly this weekend's developments with Karl Rove, Dan Froomkin's White House Briefing is a must-read today. He pulls together a lot of varied information, and lays out some questions for his fellow journalists:

* For those covering the latest developments: How does it matter whether Rove literally used Plame's name or not?

* Why, as the Think Progress blog has been asking, did no one in the White House press corps ask McClellan even one question about Rove's involvement last week as the story was starting to unfold?

* Has Karl Rove routinely hidden behind confidentiality to spread damaging information about the White House's enemies?

* Should there maybe be a new category of "I'll-go-to-jail-for-you" on background reserved exclusively for whistle-blowers?

* Will any of you ever grant Karl Rove confidentiality again?

Howard Kurtz's chat today is almost entirely about Plame/Miller/Cooper/Rove too.

The press is now going crazy on the Rove thing. The article above has links to some other press takes on this. One link is an online chat with WaPo's Howard Kurtz: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2005/07/07/DI2005070701459.html

I still don't see the big deal. A reporter called Rove. At the end of the call the Wilson thing comes up. Rove gives his two cents on the true sponsor of the trip. Mentioning a CIA agent in and of itself is not a crime. Many criteria must be met.

The press is now going crazy on the Rove thi

They are going crazy on this because DUers and Move-On Leftist have blasted every article they could find to the media so they would not forget about it and had to finally react! The Leftists were sooo pissed that the London Bombings occurred to take the story away from the Rover/Plame story that while we were worried about the London bombings they were blasting Rove Rove Rove and more Rove to all the media outlets!

The MSM are freaking over this story because their past months' defense of these reporters is that there was no crime.

They seem to be saying it's a crime to "whistle blow" perceived wrongs by government personel, but only those who blow the whistle on "conservative" bad guys get TIME covers and praise.

Reporters come to information by many ways and they are the ones who decide what gets printed. Therein lies the responsibility--Plame wouldn't have been "outted" (if she was) if only the reporter kept his mouth shut; ditto with Novak.

But it's truly hilarious--not amusing, hilarious--to see these reporters, who, since Watergate, have been defending the whistleblowing tradition, now screaming "Save us from ourselves! Don't spill secrets to us!"

Exactly. The radical left is just livid that again their attack on the evil right has blown up in their faces -- you would think by now, that they would have no face left...

It must be July if we are dealing with things this stupid.

The Donks want Rove so bad they can just taste it. The Clintonistas can sell the entire country to the ChiComs and they don't give a damn. But if Karl Rove mispoke while giving a backgrounder, it's the crime of the century

Real Americans couldn't care less about this. In fact, 298 out of 300 million Americans don't watch the highest rated cable news show. Add up the top 10 shows, and something like 280 out of 300 million are not watching. No one cares about important stuff. They sure as hell don't care about meaningless crap like this.

Remember when Kerry stated the name of a real CIA covert agent during the hearings over John Bolton?

The MSM wasn't interested in that, I wonder why ?

sarcasm off !!!!!!!!

The Donks want Rove so bad they can just taste it.

That was the impetus behind this whole thing from the start.

It's nice to see the press corp being as diligent about ROve as they were about Clinton's and the FBI files.

I agree that Rove didn't commit a crime. Then why lie about to the press afterwards? Why is there an investigation now? If Rove didn't do anything wrong, why did he lie all this time and NOW it comes out that it was him all along?

If Rove was a Democrat, everyone here would be demanding his resignaton.

You said: It must be July if we are dealing with things this stupid.

I for one am waiting for a little more explanation on this before I pooh-pooh it. The one thing I hate most about politics on both side is the tendency to defend personalities "on your team" just because they are "on your team." We are best off if we keep alert for any bad apples instead of being denial that they're out there, IMHO.

You obviouly don't have a clue about this situation, I suggest you do some research and actually understand the circumstances before accusing others of being hypocrits.

There was never any lies told and there was never any law broken, and your thinking that someone would be calling for someones resignation when nothing was ever done wrong is hyperbole at the minimum.

Well, I dumped all TV in 1997 and miss nothing. When I am exposed to it in airports, etc., it is literally comical. I was in a friends hotel room yesterday after riding the STP and his tv was on with the sound off. These guys were on the TV for HOURS standing near crashing waves because of some hurricane. How long does it take to report a weather story? I am thinking maybe a minute with pictures.

It became high comedy to look at the screen from time to time and belittle the sense of urgency on they guys face or some other irrelevant piece of trivia he was trying to make appear to be important.

Rove didn't lie? Maybe we should go after his lawyer then:

This is from the DrudgeReport:

But Rove did not leak the name of the CIA op Plame, Rove's lawyer said again Saturday night.

Robert Luskin said Rove never identified Plame to Cooper in those conversations.

"Karl did nothing wrong. Karl didn't disclose Valerie Plame's identity to Mr. Cooper or anybody else,'' Luskin said to the WASHINGTON POST. Luskin said the question remains unanswered: ``Who outed this woman? ... It wasn't Karl.''
