A new Iran has emerged: an Iran in which the military mamelukes, the praetorian guard of the regime, is muscling aside the mullahs and running the country. Contrary to the intentions of Supreme Guide Ali Khamenei, newly elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejab may be more than a puppet. He may actually drive the regime's policies further than the ruling clergy would like. There is ample precedent in Islamic history for civilian rulers to be supplanted by a military caste and we're now witnessing such a development in Iran.

We should all send letters of thanks to the retired peanut head, from Georgia, for this unparalleled mess.

The Mamelukes were a caste of military slaves who controlled Egypt for centuries. I hope that conditions in Iran have not deteriorated that far yet.
