MIDDLEBROOK, Va. - A small fire and anti-gay graffiti were found Saturday at a church belonging to the United Church of Christ, a denomination that endorsed same-sex marriage last week.
The exterior of St. Johns Reformed United Church of Christ also included a message that United Church of Christ members were sinners.
A member of the congregation discovered the graffiti when he stopped by to mow the grass. He found a small fire within the sanctuary. The fire was put out in a few minutes, Lt. Tim McCray said.

The apostacy is well underway.
That's tacky.
This is obviously a fake hate crime. I would bet a thousand dollars it was set by some peter puffer to be dramatic about the homophobic white males.
9 times out of 10 that is the case.
Why can't it ever be lightning?
To prevent duplication, please do not alter the heading. Thanks.
Who would start a small fire in a Sanctuary ?so small that a janitor could come by later and put it out. Yeah it looks fake. A gallon jug of gasoline doesnt start a small fire.
That "church" should pray for those who persecute them, and count it all joy to share in the sufferings of Christ...
Naaaah, they press charges and sue.
The important repercussions to the UCC will be the long-term loss of members who believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ and the truth of the Gospels, and the accelerated concentration of apostacy within the denomination. The latter will eventually render the body useless save as a leftist secular political organization dressed up in a religious halloween costume.
Not that that eventuality is already at hand, mind you...
Small fire, timed so that someone will put it out. Some graffiti so that it can't be mistaken as to who "must" have been responsible...
When hate crimes against gays aren't happening, stage a few on a slow news day.
Remember the DNC play book from the last election? Accuse Republicans of voter fraud, and in the absence of evidence - obfuscate and keep up the accusations, and probably fabricate on top of it all.
Hell a pint of gasoline will start a huge fire! Obvious peter puffing sympathy fire.
The little Eichmanns brought it on themselves, didn't they?
I am SO saddened by this
I became a member of the local UCC when I was 15, I was married in the church, my children were baptised and raised in the church, my mother was buried in the church. At one point, I considered becoming a minister
But now I feel they have betrayed me. After 30 years of regular church going, we haven't been to a service at our church in almost 2 years. I didn't leave the church, it left me. and I really miss it!!! We've tried out a few other churches, but none feel right.
Sigh, I have been hoping the church would come back to me, but I guess we'll have to keep looking for a new home
The person is there "just in time" to keep a small fire from spreading. Wouldn't they have crossed paths with the perp?
I agree. Who else would do it? A believing Christian - no. Another apostate angry over UCC apostasu - no. Somebody that hates Christianity so they pick on an apostate church - no. Nobody else I can think of except maybe TROP.
This reminds of how often we find out that the person (s) doing these crimes are their own like minded followers trying to frame it as the opposition to them attacking them and lighting the match or writing the deragatory words on the mirrors in the colleges themselves.
