WASHINGTON, July 8 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the Bush Administration and Republicans in Congress' repeated failure to address transit security problems in the United States:
A report outlining Democratic initiatives on transit security, "London Bombings: The Need for More Transit Security Funding and Support," prepared by Congressman Bennie Thompson's Homeland Security Committee staff also follows.
"Yesterday's horrific and senseless terrorist attacks in London once again focuses Americans on transit security. As its first order of business next week, Congress must address transit security.
"Members of Congress' highest obligation is to protect the American people. Unfortunately, by failing to increase transit security the Republican Congress is missing critical opportunities to protect the American people from terrorism. Since September 11, 2001, Republicans have funded less than half a billion of the $6 billion needed to secure America's transit systems.
"Democrats continue to support common sense measures that will increase security on trains and buses for millions of Americans and will continue to fight for bipartisan solutions that will protect America from terrorism."

For a mere $35 million
Asking price for 362-acre estate would set county home sale record

Shanel, a 362-acre hillside estate near Sonoma, is on the market for $35 million, more than three times the record price for a Sonoma County property.
The Tuscan-inspired villa tucked into an oak-studded ranch outside Sonoma is stunning by any measure, beginning with the $35million price - a Sonoma County record if the estate sells for that sum.
You won't find Villa Shanel in conventional real estate listings. Serious buyers can look through a hardcover coffee table book that highlights the two-bedroom home - stretching out over 11,605 square feet - and 362 acres of woodlands and landscaped grounds. Others can review the property on luxury-home Web sites.
The ranch's seven miles of private trails boast views of the Sonoma Valley and San Francisco Bay. The estate also features a guesthouse, stables and covered riding arena, a pool and large cabana, 10 acres of vineyards, a lake and a staff of seven who can even operate the estate's firetruck.

The property is set up for parties and benefits on a sizable scale.
Even the stables and riding ring, with stucco, tile and rich wood features, are large and nice enough for entertaining. In August, the Shansbys threw a hoedown at the stables for guests including former Gov. Pete Wilson and his wife, Gayle, U.S. Ambassador to France Howard Leach and his wife, Gretchen, U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi and her husband, Paul, and California Supreme Court Justice Ronald George and his wife, Barbara.
WHAT DO YOU GET FOR $35 MILLION?
A two-bedroom, 11,605-square-foot home, featuring 800-year-old Italian roof tiles and 200-year-old wood beams
An interior that includes dining and living rooms, a library, an office, an exercise room and a wine cellar 362 acres of property that ranges in elevation from 400 to 1,000 feet
Seven miles of private trails
A guesthouse
A stable and covered riding arena with stucco, tile and wood features
A pool, featuring an outdoor spa built of rock, and a large cabana
10 acres of vineyards planted in syrah grapes
A 1-acre lake, Lake Miwok
The estate's firetruck
Just for Fun
And just how much would the payment be on a $35 million house? With a 20% down payment, a 30-year 5.75% fixed-rate loan translates into monthly payments of $163,400.40.
So Nancy Pelosi went to a party at an expensive house owned by someone she knows? Republicans do that as well. She is a terrible person, but I don't think we can make much of that news story.

You mean like "Gov. Pete Wilson and his wife" who was at that event?
By all means, let's jerk our knees just like we did after 9/11. Let's throw more $$ down a rat hole for all those local yokel transit systems that the Mooslim ragheads couldn't find or care about even if they were given a map.
We were under attack by Muslim terrorists all through the Clinton(D) presidency. The democrats didn't do jack. They partied while good men died.
Ignore the Washington democrats. They're a waste of human flesh.
Yes Nancy, let history alone support your lack of thought before speaking.
Yep - the story showed up on a news search. The story was titled 'For A Mere $35 Million.' I thought Nancy was for sale. (Gotta pay for that Botox somehow - eh?)
Oh jeez! Puce Pelosi raises her ugly head.
Tell Nancy we're going to put Bernard Goetz in charge of transit security.
Transit security is barring Muslims, Arabs, and fellow travelers from the vicinity of public transit.
Transit Security is now a priority?? Where have she and her ilk been for the past several years?
I say put the Guardian Angels in charge.
Pass a law requiring the States to upgrade their security. This is not a federal issue, and I should not be subsidizing rich New Yorkers, Chicagoans, Washingtonians, and Los Angeleans. They should pick up the tab for their own security.
Too expensive at any price.
Concerned about transit security decentralize from the cities, small communities of fifty thousand separated by several miles of green will be more efficient than the old monsters living on top of each other.
Besides it harder to hid in smaller communities.
Yep. What you said.

Later, she insisted: "Again, without focusing on the actual decision, just to say that when you withhold funds from enforcing a decision of the Supreme Court you are, in fact, nullifying a decision of the Supreme Court. This is in violation of the respect for separation of church -- powers in our Constitution, church and state as well. Sometimes the Republicans have a problem with that as well. But forgive my digression."
"All I can say is wow," says a Republican leadership staffer. "To say anything else would just undercut the impact her remarks have had up here."
Even after the press remarks, Pelosi, according to other Democratic staffers, didn't seem to understand what the fuss was all about. "She was oblivious. She really thought she had a handle on some basic ideas about the Supreme Court, the way Congress works with the rulings of the court," says a Democratic leadership staffer. "A generation of 'Schoolhouse Rock' get this and she doesn't? Her staff should be ashamed of itself for putting her out there."
The second "order of business" should be to strap her to a toboggan from the top Mount Everest and let her rip...
