What is actually happening is human knowledge is spreading while human nature remains the same. Men as stupid and ferocious as our present enemies have been with us since the dawn of time. Now they have high explosive, because the advanced nations of the world have been using that on each other in warfare for a century and it has had time to spread to every numbskull with a dollar and a grievance.
The only people on earth who are just enough to be entrusted with such power, are divided by deep seated philosophical confusions. As a result the just people are largely unwilling to do the obvious things the situation requires, and hide in platitudes, formulas long past, pious hopes. There is justice only where just men rule, and such just men as the world can boast are largely avoiding their natural duties.
Rulers and countries that support terrorism and proliferation have no title to power, but we are too lazy to take it from them and exercise it ourselves. Morally confused idiots who will not even allow others to defend them have no title to self government or freedom, but we are too lazy to rule them paternalistically. And it will go on, until one man somewhere who knows the value other men will put on actual justice when they see it, does whatever is necessary, the pieties be damned.
Men will be governed. If they will not govern themselves then others will govern them. If they will not defend themselves then they will not be consulted, others will defend them but hold them in tutelage in return. If they are unreasonable then no one will reason with them, but they will be imprisoned or killed as required, and no one will blink. The British are congratulating themselves on not panicking. It is a silly exercise. They ought to be raising armies and occupying the Sudan, for starters. Instead they throw rock concerts and ask bankers to write off loans. They ought to be obliterating Iranian reactors without waiting for the US. Instead they play footsie with stooges at the IAEA while the next bombers get their nuclear upgrades. They ought to be debating with the Israelis the limits of their division of Syria. Instead they are sending money to the PA. They are as mad a march hare and can't see it.
