Terrorists will try to carry out an attack on the United States within the next 90 days, a former Israeli counterterrorism intelligence officer predicts.

Juval Aviv, head of the New York-based intelligence company Interfor and a special consultant to the U.S. Congress, told Fox News his information is based primarily on intelligence "floating in Europe and the Middle East."

An event is "imminent and around the corner here in the United States," he said. "It could happen as soon as tomorrow, or it could happen in the next few months. Ninety days at the most."

Aviv, author of "Staying Safe: The Complete Guide to Protecting Yourself, Your Family, and Your Business," said Americans should look at what happened in London and expect mass transportation to be the next target of attack.

"We have put all of our emphasis, right or wrong, on the aviation area," he said. "What has happened, in the last two to three years, based on information we have, the terrorists have realized that they cannot hijack a plane in America soon because the passengers are going to fight back."

The terrorists are aware, he said, that they have been successful over the last 50 years in Madrid, London, Iraq and Israel in demoralizing the public when they commute to and from work.

"What they're going to do is hit six, seven, or eight cities simultaneously to show sophistication and really hit the public," Aviv said.

But this time, he emphasized, it will not only be big cities.

"They're going to try to hit rural America," Aviv said. "They want to send a message to rural America: 'You're not protected. If you figured out that if you just move out of New York and move to Montana or to Pittsburgh, you're not immune. We're going to get you wherever we can and it's easier there than in New York.'"

Education needed

Aviv believes the Department of Homeland Security can do much more to educate the public on how to deal with terrorist attacks.

"There's no education," he said. "We're raising the color code alert and that means nothing to anyone. Whether it's green, yellow, pink, no one ever educated the public how to identify suspicious items or people."

In Israel, he noted, many terrorists have been apprehended because citizens phoned in a report.

"We don't have that training on campuses, schools, or kindergarten [in the U.S.]," he said.

Aviv pointed out that terrorists use certain tactics that the public could be made aware of. Terrorists in Israel, for example, often set a bomb to explode then time another five minutes later when the situation has calmed down and rescue teams have responded.

"You need to know all those things and think about those things," he said. "The government must pursue that. Law enforcement will never have enough people on the street to detect things. We don't have that kind of manpower. That's why the government must enlist the public."

Addressing safety precautions for those who travel mass transit, Aviv advised taking along a bottle of water, a small towel and a flashlight.

"What happened in London is exactly a point to look at," he said. "Those people who were close to the bombs died, then others were injured or died from inhaling the toxic fumes or getting trampled. The reason you take a bottle of water and a towel is that if you wet the towel and put it over your face, you can protect yourself against the fumes and get yourself out of there."

He also advises, "Don't be bashful."

"If your gut feeling tells you when you walk on to a bus there is something unusual or suspicious, get out and walk away," he said. "You may do it 10 times for no reason, but there will be one time that saves your life. Let your sixth sense direct you."

My friends and family in Pittsburgh will be glad or more likely surprised to find they live in "rural America"

It will also be pretty hard to hit "mass transit" in Montana or other truly rural areas.

I wouldn't want to give the terrorist any idea's, but if I was planning an attack, which I am not, I would try to take out all of the bridges across the Mississippi simultaneously.

I do not believe that they are so sophisticated that it could be pulled off, but it would really cripple the nation.

It is time to begin massive deportation of Muslims from Western countries. They should be returned to their countries of origin to live with their own kind and kill each other. If they have no country of origin, we should dump them in Somalia. It is not our responsibility to civilize them.

So they think they will attack and demoralize RURAL America?

That sounds like the most extreme miscalculation yet!

Rural America is not as SOFT a target as they think.

YEah. that thing about educating the public about the second bomb five minutes later? That's worked real well in Israel hasn't it.

A small towel and a bottle of water? I think that the government should pass out gas masks and we should all be required to carry them. I really do. Plus, we should all have to carry some plastic sheeting and duck tape. And be required to be able to pass a test administered by any LEO on the top 10 characteristics of a terrorist (non-profiled by race, sex, national origin, sexual or affectional preference, of course).

Some of us aren't, but I can tell you in Memphis, Tenn. there are plenty that would turn tail and run. Not like it used to be. You might think of cities like Memphis as not being rural, but it is small town America, and would never recover from a terrorist attack.

I think he means suburban mass transit or smaller cities. However unlike Israel our attackers (Arabs) will stand out outside of major urban immigrant cities. Attack a red state small city or suburban area, and watch a local mosque burn to the ground. I think one of the reasons why the muzzies have not attack in the US is because the political fallout would be negative to their cause. GWB poll numbers are below 50 percent and support for the Iraqi war has fallen. An attack now would boost US support for GWB and his policies in Iraq. Personally I would leave the US alone and let the Democrats undermind the US will to fight.

The Government of the USA has done nothing to protect the people of the USA , they are acting like spending more money for security is the answer, but it is not.

The USA keeps on allowing Savage people into the country and we have no protection against them, unless we take up arms against them. The people of the USA have had absolutley no say about allowing the enemy into our country.
Our government is not protecting us in anyway that would matter. Islam has declared war on the West, and the polls show that most Muslims approve of the harm to us.

Was this guy aware of any intelligence "floating in Europe and the Middle East" that predicted the London attacks? Just curious.

Juliet is usually more sane than her cohosts Mike and Julian, but this a.m. on F & F Weekend all three of them were obsessing over a possible attack in rural America.

They encouraged e-mailers who live in flyover country to message them about their fears. Several obliged, and they plus the hosts kept using language like "this would paralyze America and devastate the economy" if even one bomb went off in one shopping Mall, and how surprised they are the terrorists have not yet done it.

They were determined to hammer home the fear factor, which is the lifeblood of terrorists. This is absolutely stupid. And I don't care who is saying these things or what their motive is, that is my conviction of how useless, self-defeating to us and helpful to the terrorist agenda it is.

Now if Homeland Security or local LE wants to develop security programs for Malls and such, fine. I don't want these possibilities to be ignored. I am talking about all the fear chatter. It solves nothing and it helps the terrorists.

Let me repeat: it solves nothing and it helps the terrorists.

I'm sure that the honest redidents of smaller cities would love seeing "gang banging wannabes" afraid to hang out at the malls anymore...

BTW- I'm glad I decided not to bother with F&F Weekend this morning. I pass on it more and more these days...
