I think a trial is perfectly acceptable if we go back to conducting trials the way it was done a century or so ago. You capture a person one day, the trial is conducted the next morning, the jury reaches a verdict in the afternoon and the execution is carried the next day in the public square.
I remember a line in an old Doris Day movie: "We'll give them a fair trial this afternoon and hang them the first thing tomorrow morning."
