No Bad News

Read:
Esther 1:1-9

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. —Matthew 11:28

Bible In One Year: Isaiah 7-9

cover The unwillingness to listen to bad news has been blamed for everything from space shuttle disasters to corporate collapses to the spread of terrorism. Lengthy studies aren't needed to determine why this happens. Bad news reveals problems; problems require solutions; solutions cost time, money, and energy we would rather spend celebrating past successes.

This isn't new to our century. In the 5th century BC, King Ahasuerus of Persia refused to allow mourners to enter his gates (Esther 4:1-2). One commentator suggests that he preferred to surround himself with people who were awed by his wealth and were eager to attend his lavish parties (1:4). His reluctance to be bothered by bad news nearly resulted in the annihilation of the Jewish people.

Contrast the leadership of Ahasuerus with that of Jesus, who said, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Ahasuerus ruled his kingdom by allowing only happy people to enter his presence. Jesus builds His kingdom by welcoming the burdened and sorrowful into His presence. What's more, Jesus not only invites us to tell Him our bad news, He has the willingness and the power to turn our most troubling circumstances into a celebration of praise. —Julie Ackerman Link

I walked life's path with worry,
Disturbed and quite unblest,
Until I trusted Jesus;
Now faith has giv'n me rest. —Bosch

The gospel is bad news to those who reject it and good news to those who receive it.

Highlights why we should not simply struggle/agonize over obstacles/troubles - but turn them over to Him...

A wise person 'let's it all hang out' and listens/looks for His guidance...

Colleen, Grandpa's Hands is very tender and moving, and it made me think of this graphic that Nan posted Wednesday when she told us her husband's Uncle John had passed away. Nan and her husband will be conducting the service in celebration of his life today.

Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

Ingredients:
1 cup butter, unsalted
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

In a bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs and vanilla.
In a second bowl, combine and mix well the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir flour into butter mixture 1 cup at a time. Chill dough for 3 to 4 hours.
Roll out dough and cut into shapes with cookie cutters or a knife. Brush with milk and sprinkle with colored sugar.
Bake on a sheet pan or a parchment lined sheet pan in a preheated 350 degree F oven for 10 to 15 minutes depending on the size of the cookie.
Remove cookies to a rack to cool completely.

Happy Sugar Cookie Day!

There is nothing like the taste of cookies, warm from the oven. Sigh!

I keep chocolate chip cookies in my freezer because Mr.B takes them to an early morning meeting twice a week. When I mix a fresh batch and bake them, I could eat a dozen right off the cookie sheet! (After I put them in the freezer, I never think about them though) :)
