(1010 WINS) NEW YORK Calling the London attacks ``a wake up call,'' Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles Schumer on Thursday said the federal government has to do more to protect subways, rails, and buses from terrorists.
Schumer said that when a homeland security spending bill moves through the Senate next week, he would seek to quadruple the $100 million now slated to be spent on mass transit and rail security.
Schumer had already proposed an amendment to double the funding, but after the London rush hour bombings that killed dozens and injured many more, he said the funds should be doubled again.
``It seems clear mass transit is the terrorists' target of choice,'' he said. ``The bottom line is, we are not doing enough to protect mass transit.''
Clinton called for a comprehensive plan to protect all transportation systems and accused President Bush of addressing homeland security issues ``piecemeal.''
``It's been a little bit here, a little bit there, cut back there, don't go forward here,'' she said. ``We need to do more than we have been doing.''
Schumer said the government had done a good job of securing the country's airways but said other potential targets have been neglected.
``They don't understand that these terrorists are evil, but they're also smart and they're going to know exactly where we're strong and exactly where we're weak. You can't leave one place weak,'' he said.
Schumer said $50 million from the homeland security funds should go toward developing devices that can be installed on the ceilings of subway cars and at subway entrances to detect explosives, biological and chemical weapons.
The two Democrats spoke at an evening news conference at Schumer's Manhattan office.
You need to go back further. The former Soviet Union as well as most of the Warsaw Pact countries, were the primary instigators of modern Islamic Terrorism (as well as the Anarchist types such as Red Army Faction, etc...) They funded and trained these early groups and helped countries such as Lybia, Sudan, Yemen in organizing thier terrorist training camps. This all occured dirng the 60's and 70's.
During the 80's RR had the resolve to fight back against several of these countries (most notably Lybia) and the overt "state sponsorship" of terrorism subsided. The various groups, no longer "directly" accountable to any one nation, began coordinating amoung themselves, with OBL's group becoming the major player (mostly due to his wealth). Also, the attack dogs that the Soviets had created felt no great loyalty to thier former masters (they being infidels and such), thus the Soviets and later Russia began to be plagued by islamic terrorism as well.
During the 90's, these groups wer able to proliferate with little or no reaction from the west. The Europeans "appeased" (i.e. paid the extortion) and the US "forgot". Any incidents that did occur were treated as nuisances.
The old Warsaw Pact countries could do a lot to help clean up the mess they helped to start by opening the state archivs and releasing all of the information regarding thier previous involvment with terrorism (names, methods, etc...). this will likely never happen as it would be embarrassing to many who may today still be in power, but I can dream . . .
It's very strange, the usual suspects around my office are NOT discussing the atacks in London at all. I was expecting and was braced for the "See?!!? If we had'nt attacked Iraq, this never would have happened!" nonsense, but...nothing.
While that ass Hillary and the slob Schumer pick the corpses for political capital, I think the left in this country woke yesterday morning with one of their legs kicked out from under them - they've been running around claiming that there was no threat, that Bush was using the war to take away our liberties because he's such a meanyhead...and now, they have it right in their face, the threat is still there. I don't think they quite know how to handle it. They'll get their marching orders, but right now, they're just confused.
I hope Michael Moore is sitting on his fat ass in his home realizing all of those times he grunted "There is no threat!" on tv shows and on print just came back to bite his subway-sized rear end, and he's been made a fool of by the terrorists he defended.

While we're discussing Leftists living under rocks, Matt Lauer was interviewing Rudy Guiliani this morning on the Today show. At one point Lauer told the audience that there had been no terrorists attacks on American soil until 9/11/01.
In the rock under which Lauer lives, apparently there never was a 1993 attack on the World Trade Center or the Oklahoma City bombing, or even earlier terrorist attacks in New York City during the Truman era.
We could spend ten billion dollars. If they want to hit us, they will be able to do it.

Somebody on the Pat Gray Morning Show in Houston this morning suggested a Mosque to Mall program. Under this, every mosque and school would be put under scrutiny, and every sermon and lesson analyzed. If one incites violence or hatred, or if another terrorist attack occurs, one mosque will be seized using the tool that the Supreme Court has so kindly given us, Eminent Domain, and that mosque will be converted either into a Shopping Mall or a McDonalds, whichever will bring in the most tax revenue. If the Imam straightens up and flies right, he can keep preaching. If not, his capital facility can become part of the capitalist system.
I think it's a grand idea.
