(1010 WINS) NEW YORK Calling the London attacks ``a wake up call,'' Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles Schumer on Thursday said the federal government has to do more to protect subways, rails, and buses from terrorists.
Schumer said that when a homeland security spending bill moves through the Senate next week, he would seek to quadruple the $100 million now slated to be spent on mass transit and rail security.
Schumer had already proposed an amendment to double the funding, but after the London rush hour bombings that killed dozens and injured many more, he said the funds should be doubled again.
``It seems clear mass transit is the terrorists' target of choice,'' he said. ``The bottom line is, we are not doing enough to protect mass transit.''
Clinton called for a comprehensive plan to protect all transportation systems and accused President Bush of addressing homeland security issues ``piecemeal.''
``It's been a little bit here, a little bit there, cut back there, don't go forward here,'' she said. ``We need to do more than we have been doing.''
Schumer said the government had done a good job of securing the country's airways but said other potential targets have been neglected.
``They don't understand that these terrorists are evil, but they're also smart and they're going to know exactly where we're strong and exactly where we're weak. You can't leave one place weak,'' he said.
Schumer said $50 million from the homeland security funds should go toward developing devices that can be installed on the ceilings of subway cars and at subway entrances to detect explosives, biological and chemical weapons.
The two Democrats spoke at an evening news conference at Schumer's Manhattan office.

The first wake-up call was the WTC I in 1993. President Clinton didn't even bother visiting the scene of the "crime," which is how his adminstration treated it along with Khobar towers, our embassies in East Africa, and the USS Cole.

What about catching these guys before they make it to the trains? What about keeping them in Gitmo so they don't have the opportunity to get on the bus? What about not encouraging these terrorists when the Senators compare our troops to Nazi's?
I thought about that also. Its amazing how few were killed although 50 is still a horrible number. Seeing the Londoners going back into the subway system is a good sight to see. They are like NYers resolute, strong and will not be intimidated. God Bless them.
Two of the bombs didn't go off. I feel God's hand of protection was on these folks. It could have been sooo much worse, as you indicate. Yes, it is sad. It's sad that our so-called European allies (except the UK) have chosen to ignore our pleas for help in Iraq and to ignore terrorists living in their own countries. They WILL rue the day, I'm afraid.

If the London bombings are a wake up call for the Democrats they must have been hitting the "snooze button" repeatededly beginning with the IRAQ/al Qaeda attack on the WTC on February 23, 1993. Yes, Iraq did attack the World Trade Center!
Democrats are wanting to sound tough, in reality the most important thing to them is reacquiring power. They will do, say and sacrifice everything to achieve this goal, even national security.
Democrats are longing for another attack by the enemy on American soil while President Bush is in office, their criticsms folowing this event are already written.
Did either of them get hurt rushing to get in front of a camera?

I'll bet when Hillary and Chuck heard about the London bombings, the first thing they thought was, "How can we pin this on Bush?".
OK, so we spend huge amounts of money securing public transportation. Then, the terrorists just switch their "target of choice" to schools, malls, theatres, casinos, or sporting events. Then what do we do, Chuckie? Then what do we do, H*****y?

That being said you are in a crowded Subway car, The device that recognises a bomb goes off. A suicide bomber ois on the car. What do you do? Besides hiding behind a fat lady what can you do? By the time the suicide bomber gets on its too late.
Chuckie and Hillary dont believe there is any problem you cant win by throwing money at it. They will vote to Quadruple the funds as long as New York gets 3/4 ths of those funds.
