At a minimum, they will know the type of container (backpack, briefcase, etc.) If the containers are the same, they can scan security cameras in the tube stations and near the bus to ID people carrying similar packages.
Some speculate that the bomb that exploded in the bus was a suicide bomber who didn't make it to the tube in time.
