There were internment camps in central Alabama for Germans. When I lived in Alabama, there were news stories about the camps. There must have been an anniversary date of them being released or something. But I could be crazy, and my memory could be flawed.
Sure those weren't POW camps of Germans taken prisoner in Europe and shipped here for the duration?
There definitely were prisoner of war camps in the South.
I'm in Dothan, Alabama. An antique mall is currently located in what was once a prison camp (aka internment camp). It is an odd structure of about a dozen gabled roofed buildings attached to one another - the roofline looks something like this:

This argument, vis-a-vis our current problems, is really neither here nor there. Just an academic exercise at this point.
