I agree with you that this could be the nail in Chirac's arrogant coffin because he's become such an embarrassment for the French people. I suspect Chirac's popularity to hit new lows, maybe 18% popularity.

Blair will likely be no longer Prime Minister in 2012, but he should take some credit for this; his personal diplomacy did help in this. The other hero of the hour is Lord Coe, who apparently made an outstanding presentation, while also being the driving force behind the bid.
All well done - and now Chirac is powerless as a consequence.
