Quoting a report from the Second International Naval Show (IMDS-2005) in St. Petersburg.
Moreover, Kommersant found out that Rosoboronexport is negotiating with Iran about repair and modernization of Iranian submarines. Iran has three submarines of Project 877EKM that were supplied by Russia in 1992 (Russian name of the sub B-219, Iranian901 Tareq), in June 1993 (B-224, 902 Noor) and in November 1996 (B-175, 903 Yunes). It was expected that all the major components that already exceeded their life expectancy will be replaced. Also, the new anti-ship missile complex Club-S with the target distance of 200 km will be installed on these subs. The refurbishing of each sub would be done under the contract which costs anywhere from $80 to $90 million. Originally it was expected that the refurbishing will be done in Zvezdochka Co (Severo-Dvinsk) but Admiralty Shipyards are also fighting for the contract.
I agree with that. The crack about Commies was more a joke than anything else, but you are right about name calling. Although to a certain extant this is only a continuation of their policy under communism, which argues in favor of it being nationalism.
They are probably a better shallow water boat than our nuke subs. Any former sub people out there would know better than I do.
They are a problem, but I'm sure that if need be, the US could find a solution to them
Can you even imagine being on a sub crewed by the Iranians?
Think of the smell.
You are right but this country will continue to try and appease the Ruskies. Barf.
Let's put Nukes in the Ukraine.
Are Iranians any better at submarine shopping than Canadians are?
He may have big dreams. But the rapidly declining population makes such dreams moot. A nation, in peacetime, can't continue to have 170 deaths for every 100 births -- especially on top of a net immigration outflow.
And Russian weapons? US military equipment has been turning Russian military equipment into scrap metal for decades on battlefields around the world. Once our missile defense system is up and running, Russia's final military asset, it's ICBM's, will be just as worthless.
We don't have allot of friends in the world now days. I think the Russians try to keep us busy on the world stage.
They don't seem to be concerned at all about rogue states gaining nuclear technology, that's always puzzled me. They have had their own radical islamic problems for years. Go figure.
Just musing.....
Iran is the death enemy of Israel. Do those subs and missles threaten Israel? Yes, they do. Israel is within range of the missles, maybe after a little sail time.
Iran is moving closer and closer to nuclear weapons. When, lo and behold, this is learned, what happens then?
Iran is basically handcuffed. Israel has nukes and will retaliate if attacked, with full atomic support from us.
We'd love it if Iran provided enough provocation for us to take out their nuke sites. Israel wouldn't tolerate any provocation from Iran. We've sent J-Dams to Israel, and they have their own nukes. Besides, Israel did that before, to Iraq.
We also know that Iran is backing Muslim terrorists we fight in Iraq, and has backed past major terrorist attacks against us.
There's probably more, but Iran might be a little further out on thin ice than it thinks. (Iran/think...Does that sound oxymoronic?)
Iran could be a stalemate in the region for a long time. I don't think Iran will act, because of swift retaliation from several sides. The only way Iran could be aggressive militarily would involve allying with another major power that could deter others (us) from stepping in.
It does seem to me, however, that Iran's backing of terrorism might cause its sub fleet to suffer from mysterious (and violent)dissappearances. :D
NEWSFLASH! The Cold War never ended. It's just being fought by proxy for now. They need our capital and technology to rebuild for their next blitz. Communists are stubborn and pragmatic.
See my post #92.
Putin? Underhanded? Perish the thought. Why he's a fine upstanding....Hey anybody seen my Super Bowl ring?
This appears to be a very tough row to hoe for our Kremlinphiles.
Wow - Putie wasted no time making political hay out of the London blast.
He wants carte blanche in his sphere of influence. He's blaming the west for his problems in Chechnya.
