Actually, it was the tripods that the aliens were inside of that were undefeatable with our weapons, not the aliens themselves.

they didn't look all that undefeatable to me. Of course the only times they were out of their ships no small arms fire was exchanged. I saw them as similar to the aliens in Independence Day who weren't worth squat once their shields were turned off.
