A Goliad County constable pretended to be a smuggler Monday to lure eight illegal immigrants out of the South Texas brush.
A state trooper attempted to stop a white van at about 9:30 a.m. Monday. The driver refused to stop and drove into a residential area, where about 40 people bailed out of the vehicle and ran into nearby brush.
Goliad County Precinct 1 constable Michael De La Garza said that some of the immigrants were either caught or turned themselves in throughout the day, but eight people were still unaccounted for that afternoon. "We conducted a sting operation to lure eight illegal immigrants out of the brush," De La Garza said.
A sheriff's department investigator dressed in civilian clothes approached the immigrants and asked if they wanted a ride to Houston. Once they agreed, he told them a vehicle would arrive for them at 4:30 p.m., De La Garza said. "It was determined that I would be the coyote," he said.
He went home and changed into a muscle shirt and a Corona cap and drove an unmarked vehicle to the designated location. He said all eight immigrants came out of the brush and got into the vehicle. "I had water for them and they all crammed into a Ford Expedition," he said.
All the immigrants were detained Monday by the Goliad County Sheriff's Department, Cpl. Virginia Escojido said.
"Everything worked out perfect," De La Garza said. "The community is safe now and the immigrants are safe, too. They were starving and dehydrated."

Nice. Around here, the cops aren't allowed to apprehend illegals. They could be standing on the sidewalk holding "I BROKE INTO THE U.S." signs and the cops would have to drive right by them.
