"Traditionally strong in New England, the liberal denomination of 1.3 million members has long been supportive of gays and lesbians."

Ever wonder why the pubbies in New England are so wussy about social issues?

From a UCC BBS:

Given that the Hartford Seminary FACT survey of 2000 showed that only about 27 of UCC congregations self-identify as theologically liberal (moderately or very), and 44 percent self-identify as moderate, and 29 percent self-identify as theologically conservative (moderately to very)...surely this affirmative vote does not truly reflect the mind of the UCC. We'd do better to send each congregation a ballot than to rely on the General Synod delegates' vote as representative. The way the UCC is reporting this vote via its news service it sounds like the whole denomination has voted in favor of this resolution. The public doesn't understand the nuances of our polity....

The merger was 1957 between the Congregational Christian Churches and the Evangelical & Reformed Church. Disciples of Christ were never part of the merger.

I must admit I never even heard of the UCC until the recent spate of stories about them. Is there some part of the country where thet are big or influential?

Anyone here used to be a member?

Wow. That's quite a succinct way of putting it.

Sorry for the error about the Disciples of Christ.

The very idea of Congregational Churches having a national office that someone could become the head of, thereby promoting heresy in the name of all the churches, was obviously an error.

Well, in the old days it was just to coordinate missionary activities, hymnals, seminarian training, benevolence for retired ministers and their widows and orphans, and the like, the sort of voluntary cooperation on matters of direct mutual interest that even libertarians could agree it made sense to work together on.

Evangelical and Reformed Church was more hierarchical. The '57 merger was a huge mistake for the Congos. The hierarchy thing was new and it didn't mix socially: anywhere there were both Congo and E&R churches a fair number of Congos departed for the Episcopal Church because they felt more comfortable there.

It was absorbed into what is now the PCUSA in 1983.

I had forgotten about their merge with PCUSA. During the 80's, while in my 20's, I had drifted from the church for a time, and that happened then. I am thankful that ours was one of the churches that helped form the PCA.

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

What an affront to Jesus Christ, to use his name on a church organization, and then put the stamp of approval on homosexual "marriage". Anyone who doesn't leave that church right now is going to get stained by it.

Freepmail if you want on/off this pinglist.
