AP NEWS ALERT:
NEW ORLEANS (AP) Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Hank Stram has died at age 82.
"You marked it good, you marked it good. You're doing a helluva job." RIP Hank, you were one-of-a-kind.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Hank Stram, a legend in Kansas City sports history, died Monday in New Orleans following a lengthy illness.
He was 81.
Stram led the Chiefs to their only two Super Bowl appearances: In Super Bowl I the Chiefs lost to the Green Bay Packers, and in Super Bowl IV in 1970, the Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings.
"It was all about the team. Winning was -- that's the name of the game in sports -- and it was team and winning is what I remember the most," Chiefs Hall of Fame kicker Jan Stenerud said in a 2003 interview.
Stram also had the respect of his opponents.
"Just being a winner and being a guy that you knew his teams were always going to be prepared, and he was a colorful coach," Former Miami Dolphins Head Coach Don Shula told KMBC in 2003.
"(He was) a tenacious, vicious competitor. He had a love and passion for football," Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis said.
RIP Hank.
I loved the Chiefs under his tuteledge....some great players.
... and he had such an infectious enthusiasm.
The only decent coach in Saints' history. They never gave him a chance and have suffered ever since. VERY sad to hear this news.
He was one of the major reason that the AFL was able to challenge the NFL. His offensive schemes changed the game.
I guess there's no avoiding it, but I'm sure sorry to hear about it. He was a great one.
"Matriculate the ball down the field"
He was fun to listen to, even if I didn't know what he was talking about. Rest easy Hank, you're one of the people that made football fun to watch.
Thanx ... didn't think it was already posted, since it was an AP alert.
RIP. I enjoyed listening to him when he was a radio announcer on the monday night football radio play-by-play. And he was miked up for Super Bowl IV. I think he may have been to first coached who did that is a super bowl.
Very innovative, with that Big-I, and so forth. I think Landry got that shift where the players stand up from Stram.
I am glad there was a quote from Al Davis in the story you posted. I am an Oakland Raiders fan that has tremendous admiration for Hank Stram. My favorite football radio broadcast team was Jack Buck and Hank Stram. They were great together.
Apparently New Orleans did have one NFL champion within city limits.
Yep, the Saints screwed up on that one. If you can't win with Hank Stram, you can't win with anybody.
And... they don't. Sorry. I'm still bitter on how they traded down from this great coach to a Bum. Mecom. That damned and godless Mecom.
and I miss the head coach dressed for the game , jacket and tie , some with their favorite hat , oh it was GRAND , right?
