Luis' new home is a patch of woods in Brookhaven. He uses local businesses for his bathroom and each day hopes to find something to sleep on.
Until recently, the day laborer - who was afraid to give his full name - and a dozen others had been living together in the same overcrowded house in Farmingville, paying $200 to $250 a month to live three to a room.
They said they were evicted on a half-hour's notice at 10:30 p.m. because their landlord didn't want to get arrested the way landlord Rosalina Dias had a week earlier after a raid on an overcrowded house she owned at 33 Woodmont Place.
Now most nights they sleep on the ground with plastic garbage bags as their only protection from the elements. They stash their few belongings under bushes or leave them at friends' houses when they go off to find work in the morning. They can't cook, but when they get hungry, they go to the local Kmart or other stores to buy milk and cookies or other food.
"I feel humiliated sleping there," said Luis, 40, who was born in Mexico and is living on Long Island illegally. He looks for work most mornings at the 7-Eleven on Horseblock Road and North Ocean Avenue. "I'm living very differently than what they told me is America."

Did anyone also tell you that breaking into America isn't the best way to obtain what "is America"?
Uum, Luis, how about going back home?
Oh please. Just shut the 'frig up. I am so sick of this sort of whining. You entered the country ILLEGALLY.
If you can't game the system in the U.S. any better than this, then you are not only an illegal alien, you are a DUMB illegal alien. Go to California and learn how the pros do it.
"Uum, Luis, how about going back home?"
Well, it's Bush's fault. He should instruct some of his many tax paid minions to SEND Luis home.
....and we need MORE of these people here....WHY?
Someone care to explain?
No regrets for Luis here - well, except that he poses a public health problem because he ain't using local businesses for all of his potty breaks. Arrest and deport. Simply the best thing for Luis and us. Adios, amigo.

We have a "sure fire" way to get you home with your loving family, real cheap !
Oh, my heart bleeds.
I couldn't afford Long Island either, and had to leave 7 years ago. That's the way it is.
