Because we're selfish. We are remaining single in increasing numbers to later ages so that we can enjoy our many new toys, sensual pleasures and leisure time created by the longest period of prosperity in our history.
Both my grandmothers were married at age 13 and each had over ten children. Neither one ever went para-sailing in Cancun though.
Oh, and it wouldn't have anything to do with the massive changes to immigration that came about in 1965. It wouldn't have anything to do with the loss of millions of manufacturing jobs over the past 50 years. It wouldn't have anything to do with the continual wave of layoffs and downturns that we've experienced since the 1970s when we failed to answer the threat of globalism to our internal economy.
But you go ahead and keep working to overwhelm our culture with Hispanic immigration and our manufacturing and services economy with outsourcing, offshoring, and imports.
Go right ahead. Just don't be too selfish about it.
For some, deciding to have children is a selfish act. Others decide not to have children because they worry about not being able to provide health care, education, AND time for them. If you're working two jobs to survive, you can't be providing the supervision and nurturing children require to thrive.
Its all them toys and pleasures that make our economy strong. What an unpatriotic thing to suggest we should forgo them.
