I posted the entire article, and the FR servers accepted it. However, later on, one of the mods converted the post into an excerpt. That is because the article is syndicated from the Washington Post, which is on the must-excerpt list.

Great review. 1776 is #3 on the NYTimes nonfiction list. Should be a rousing good read!

[ I always see him pressing conservative points of view on TV, and his liberal cohorts (not captors) merely ignore him. ]

I wasn't that impressed with it. Michael Shaara's "The Glorious Cause" of a couple years ago did a much better job of covering the same ground.

'Saratoga' by Richard Ketchum - Best book of the Rev War IMHO, and one of the best battle books as well - follows the whole battle following Gentleman Johnny and does a great job showing why American frontier mettle won the day.
Also does a great job of telling the story of why, if Benedict Arnold had died there, he would be one of America's greatest heros. A wonderful read.

Patriots: The Men Who Started the American Revolution, by A.J. Langguth, is a good brisk read that follows the revolution from the stirrings in the 1760's thru the finish.
However, I will never understand how one of America's greatest heroes (Arnold) became one of it greatest traitors (I cannot honestly say Arnold was the greatest traitor, what with J F Kerry, Jimmah Carter, and most of the Supreme Court walking around) .

If you are at all interested in history written like a very good novel, you will enjoy 1776.
I was up 'till 2:00 am for 2 mornings reading it.

I'll ask my wife to. She just got done with it. I'm in the middle of "The Source", so probably won't get to it in another week.
