Kabul - One member of a group of U.S. soldiers missing for nearly a week in north-eastern Afghanistan was rescued, the U.S. broadcaster CNN reported Sunday, citing U.S. military sources.
The report stated that the circumstances of the rescue were not disclosed in consideration of the ongoing effort.
The group of soldiers went missing in east of the mountainous Kunar province during a reconnaissance mission in which U.S. military encountered heavy fighting with Afghan rebels.
In the same mission, a helicopter sent in as backup for the U.S. forces was shot down, killing all 16 persons on board.
Meanwhile, unknown gunmen on Sunday in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandahar shot a cleric Mawlavi Mohammad Musba, who later died of his wounds at a U.S. military hospital, officials said.
According to Mohammad Ayub Salangi, a senior police officer in Kandahar, Musba - a member of the province's religious council - was shot by two men in Dand district of Kandahar, while he was on his way home late Sunday morning.
No one has claimed responsibility for the incident, but Afghan officials in the past have blamed rebels with the former ruling Taliban for similar acts.
If they could E&E, then these guys would, as evidenced by this one rescued. Hopefully they will find more of that team who were able to do the same. I am sure this soldier's debrief will provide critical info to that end.
A SOLDIER is not a SEAL. So the SOLDIER that was found alive can't be from the Seal Team that you say is missing.
Unless the MEDIA reporter doesn't know a SOLDIER from a SAILOR.
They usually don't. But, IMHO, it is pretty clear that the one rescued is form the SF team that was on the ground. At least that's how I read it.
ping for later updates. thanks.
Praise the Lord! That's fantastic news. The Special Ops are the best of the best. IF anyone can make it through enemy lines, they can. Prayers will continue for their rescue too.
Media, enemy? How do we tell the difference?

Criminal Number 18F
To be worrying about semantics(MSM semantics at that) is foolishness at this time -
Is it possible the details will remain classified?
This is some good news.
U.S. forces rescued a member of a U.S. special operations reconnaissance team in the rugged mountains of northeastern Afghanistan Sunday, five days after the team went missing amid hostile fire, according to a U.S. defense official.
The official said that the search continues for three other members of the team still missing in Konar province near the border with Pakistan. All four men are Navy SEALS, he said.
The rescued service member was injured and was taken to a U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, for treatment, according to the official.

The Navy SEAL rescued in Konar was recovered by forces that have been involved in a massive hunt since officials lost contact with the team Tuesday. Shortly afterward a special operations helicopter sent to assist them crashed near its intended landing site, killing all 16 service members on board. Military officials say they believe the helicopter was shot down with a rocket-propelled grenade.
But little more was known about the search effort. Defense officials were reluctant to provide details due to concerns about compromising the ongoing operation.
Reuters news service, citing an unnamed senior Afghan police official, reported that U.S. forces bombarded hostile positions in the area on Sunday. U.S. military officials have only reported conducting air strikes on a hostile compound Friday.
A four-man special forces unit disappeared in eastern Konar province on 28 June, and a Chinook helicopter looking for them was later shot down.
The rescued soldier was reported to have avoided capture in the days since his disappearance, US officials said.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, US military officials said the soldier had evaded the Taleban in the mountainous region throughout the past week.
There has been no word on the fate of the remaining three members of his team, who have reportedly not made radio contact since their disappearance.
The BBC's Andrew North, in eastern Afghanistan, says the rescued soldier reportedly pointed the US search team in the direction where other members of the team had gone, but their whereabouts and condition still remains unclear.
The fact that he pointed in the directions the others had gone indicates that they were all still alive after taking fire and simply headed off in different directions to evade. Good news. Hoping the others will also be found soon (by our side).
Keep prayers going -
Exactly my first thought too. No, my second thought, first one was Praise be to God! Prayers continuing for all of them.
Amen...and in the same order!
This doesn't sound right. Shouldn't each have an individual plan unknown to the other three, in case one of the others is captured?
God Blessed him; may He bless them all.
general McInerney on FNC right now - regarding the other 3, he is saying his source is tellling him "the taliban does not have them". that's all he is willing to say. that could mean alot of things I guess.
Thanks be to Almighty God!! Help us find the rest of the missing soldiers, dear Lord..
The other day I heard, (radio news, ABC I think), a report say that, " surveillance aircraft were monitoring" members of the team. I haven't heard anything like that since.
well, if you look at one of the other threads on this - that Predator drone that was monitoring the situation, was also shot down. but we may haved moved others in now as part of the rescue mission.
